Breaking our tradition of releasing series posts on a Friday, Martin gives us an in depth view into his vast experience as a software engineer, as well as what type of cup he favours when enjoying a beer on his holidays.

Tell us a bit about what you do at Paid

I’m Martin, and I work in Paid’s Engineering team — I’m a Technical Architect by trade, and I spend most of my time designing systems & processes that help us deliver the platform. I even get to write code.

What does your day-to-day look like?

At Paid the team works very closely together, so we spend a lot of time discussing ideas and solutions, reviewing the platform and planning for the future. We’re always reviewing technologies and practices that can improve what we’re doing and help our users, so we’re never sitting still.

Recently I’ve been focusing on our Risk Management systems, which include all kinds of behavioural analyses as well as integration with third parties such as credit reference agencies and the like. We’re really trying to do something different here to get a picture of our users and their clients, so we can focus on how best to help them.

What were you doing before you worked at Paid?

I’ve worked in software since graduating in 2001, which seems a long time ago now! I started off in the games industry originally, which was a fantastic place to cut my teeth and learn the ropes, before moving into corporate software and then into digital agency work. The common theme for me has always been learning — Experience gives you the tools and confidence to know what you’re doing, but that doesn’t mean the way you did it last is still the best. I’ve always loved the variety of working in software, and I’ve been lucky enough to have been involved in some amazing projects. Paid is another example of this so it was an obvious next step for me.

If you weren’t at Paid, what would you be doing?

I’d hopefully be doing something equally meaningful, something that can improve people’s lives or businesses or both.

Tell us something unexpected about yourself.

When not in the UK, I only consume beverages served in hollowed out fruit.
