Windows | Intro to Painnt
Here’s a few basic steps to help you get on your way to becoming a master “digital artist”. Ready, set, Painnt!
1. Select a filter
Choose from one of our 140+ available filters. New filters will appear first on the Home screen, and if you scroll down, you will find them in categories (mosaic, classic, trippy, etc.)
Or just click on the “See More” button at the top right of the New filters carrousel, to browse our full selection.
2. Choose your input
Pick a filter and you will continue to the Preview screen. A pop-up box will appear in the middle of the screen where you can select the source to import your photo.
- Gallery: This button will open your device’s file explorer for you to find the image file you’d like to filter
- Camera: This button will open your device’s camera for you to shoot a new photo to filter.
- Social networks: This button will allow you to import a photo from your Facebook or Instagram profile.
3. Adjust your picture
On the Preview screen, you can get a glimpse of what the filter will look like applied to your image. Customize each filter’s settings and observe the changes to your photo “in real time”. Find a cheat sheet here to learn how each setting can modify your photo.
To change the photo, tap the pencil icon at the top right, next to the input image icon.
The Output will determine the dimensions your final artwork will have. This is always subject to the original image’s size and your device’s processing capabilities — but in general the output size will be:
- Medium: 800 px (either in width or height, whichever is largest)
- HD: 1280 px (width or height)
- FHD : 1920 px (width or height)
- 4K: 3840 px (width or height)
- Original: select the exact dimensions you want the final image to have (up to the dimensions of your original photo).
If you wish to start from scratch, just open the Menu at the top left and click “Reset settings” to erase the modifications applied to the filter and restore the default values.
Pro tip: To pin your favorite filters to the top of the Home screen, just open the Menu at the top left of the Preview screen. Tap on the “Mark as Favorite” toggle to bookmark the current effect you’re using, and it will show up first next time you open the app.
Pro tip: To see other filters with the same look to the one you have selected, tap on “Related effects” to browse and apply filters that have a similar feel to the one you are working on.
When you’re ready to see the final results, tap on the Checkmark at the top right of the screen to create your masterpiece.

5. Save or share
Congratulations! You’ve successfully created a gorgeous masterpiece to save or display to your friends and family.
To export the painting, you have a couple options:
- Save: Click the top right Save icon to export the final artwork to your device.
- Top Left Menu: Click the menu next to Nice work! to open a set of options:
- Submit to users’ creations: Display your creation on Moonlighting’s community of digital artists (and participate to get featured on our home page!). Click here to see a brief tutorial.
