Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse loses Big to No. 1 Ranked Cortland Red Dragons

OSWEGO — Cortland senior Ashley Gentile netted seven goals to help lead top-ranked Cortland to an 18–7 women’s lacrosse victory over Oswego State on Saturday at Laker Turf Stadium.

The Red Dragons improved to 4–0 in the SUNY Athletic Conference and 12–0 overall.

The Lakers are 2–2 in the SUNYAC and 6–3 overall.

The Lakers kept it close through the first 10 minutes of the first half. At that point, Cortland’s lead was 3–2. The Laker goals were scored by Emily Lange and Erannan Shattuck.

Cortland then went on a run, netting four straight goals for a 7–2 lead with 16:27 left in the half. The Dragons went into halftime with a commanding 13–4 cushion.

Cortland came out firing in the second half, scoring the first three goals. The Lakers didn’t score until 22:52 remained in the game. Erannan Shattuck notched her second goal of the game to make it 16–5, but the Dragons’ cruised to the win.

Lange finished with three goals, putting her total at 18 on the season.

Oswego State had three players tally two points apiece. Erannan Shattuck and Esther Gabriel had two goals each, while Teresa Shattuck dished out two assists.

For the Dragons, Nicole Bello also had a solid offensive game with four goals. Kristen Ohberg tallied six points on two goals and four assists, and Tara Monaghan and Carly Stone each scored twice.

Cortland took 26 shots on goal compared to Oswego State’s 16.

The Dragons won 18 out of the 26 draw controls.

In net for Oswego State, Angela Ponto collected eight saves. She also scooped up five ground balls. Defensively, Danielle Walker had a caused turnover and four ground balls.

The Lakers return to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday when they host the Buffalo State Bengals in another SUNYAC matchup.
