Wouldn’t you like to know when you meet someone, how best to communicate with them?

Whether you’re a) a businesswoman, b) someone looking for a boyfriend or husband or c) just getting acquainted with your new next door neighbour, understanding who you’re dealing with and how they interface with the world can help you communicate most effectively.

When you understand how someone communicates, you can tailor your approach to a) make that sale, b) bag yourself a great boyfriend / husband, c) form a great relationship.

True Diversity

The world is made up of diverse individuals, all of whom (in my opinion) have a predisposition to live certain lives. This is not to say that they are living out some kind of predetermined destiny, more that as children they grow up and make decisions from the things they observe and participate in, what they would prefer for themselves as their lives progress.

We are not all born as the same blank slates. Any parent with more than one child can plainly see that each child is born with a unique, individual character and personality, whether they’re bold, shy, boisterous, serious or full of humour. Whether they enjoy music, football, reading books or spending time outside, everyone is made up of a bit of nature and bit of nurture.

Back to the hands. The hands are full of nerves, they are the point at which we interface with the world, we feel our way with the skin on our palms and fingertips.

Our hands can be our tools, affording us to cook, clean , paint, dress ourselves, and carry out physical tasks, they are also how we show affection; holding hands, touching, feeling as well as giving sexual pleasure.

The skin is the place where the nerves in the brain interface with the external world. Those of us who are thick skinned have a thicker barrier protecting us from the outside world than those of us with thin skin, and therefore will tend to be less sensitive to physical and emotional pain, while those of us with thin skin will tend to be more sensitive, both physically and emotionally.

In the world of chirology, there are broadly three types of skin you’re likely to encounter:

Silk

What does it feel like?

Very soft and delicate, almost like a silk scarf. It almost tickles when you touch it, like you can feel an electric charge being transmitted.

Where are they commonly found?

Silky skin is normally present on small, delicate women’s hands. If found on men, they will tend to be very intuitive, with psychic powers, into astrology, palmistry and other pursuits which expand awareness of being.

It’s not surprising that very fine skin is found on very sensitive people, those who are very intuitive. More women have fine quality skin than men, and water hands have more than their fair share of silk skinned hands.

Psychic powers, a very refined sense of taste, smell and general feng-shui is common on silk skinned hand bearers.

Silk skin is the finest quality, and indicates a predisposition to the very finest thought processes. Intellectual pursuits are prized over physical ones.

How the person interfaces with the world?

They probably don’t like stimulants, likely avoid tea of coffee or have it very weak or decaffeinated. They don’t need any artificial stimulants, they are stimulated enough as it is, with very little between them and the outside world, like can feel raw at times. There’s a desire for drama and emotional engagement with others. Silky skinned people do not easily tolerate dirt or disorder, they like a clean house.

The palm of an individual with silky skin will most likely look extremely ‘busy’ with a mass of lines everywhere, like a spider web, indicating a very busy mental frame of mind. Silky skin is often associated with nail biting, and those with hygiene foibles, Cleanliness OCD for example, or hang ups over sexual health.

Silk skin hands will occupy positions where sensing and feeling are paramount.

How to make the sale / pull / befriend?

Appeal directly to their senses, to their emotions. Think about story telling and building an emotional connection with them. If dating, choose something which stirs the senses, a movie, a fun activity which is not too physical, painting or drawing. In romance think scented candles a hot bath, relaxing music and clean fresh cotton sheets with a high thread count, and plump feather pillows.

Paper

What does it feel like?

Not surprisingly, like a piece of paper

Where are they commonly found?

Very common in Western economies on office workers’ hands, those who inhabit the world of paper. People who work with paper, books, writers, clerks, anyone with a predominantly office based job, a paper pusher if you will.

How the person interfaces with the world?

There is a good level of refinement, perhaps not as much as the very fine quality silk skin, but still able to read cues, and sense a mood in a room. Perhaps not psychic in powers, but still able to work out the best course of action from intuition.

How to make the sale / pull / befriend? Don’t be too ethereal in your approach, common sense and logic will appeal, back up your pitch with evidence, facts if you will. In a potential partner, you can certainly read them something you like, you’re quite likely to find them a fan of tech and the socials, and a date involving the movies, or something mentally stimulating over physically stimulating would do the trick. A museum, gallery or exhibition or even watching a band or orchestra or dance act would be greatly appreciated.

Grainy

What does it feel like?

There’s a clearly felt texture to grainy skin. It’s still soft, supple and warm to the touch, but with a noticeable grainy texture to the skin. As skin quality degrades from the very finest skin to the coarsest, the palmar ridges become more prominent, and more clearly visible. My wife, who has silky skin, cannot use phone fingerprint readers because her fingerprint is too fine to register. Grainy skin has no such issue. You can determine the fineness of skin by counting the number of dermal ridges per cm.

When shaking hands with a grainy hand bearer, you will notice a firm but not crushing grip, a fleshyness and firm physicality to the shake.

Where are they commonly found?

Grainy skin is found on the hands of those who are more comfortable in the realm of the physical, they enjoy physicality, sports or active pursuits of some kind, even something as simple as kneading and baking bread can be a good outlet for a grainy hand. Whereas a softer palm or silk or paper quality might enjoy a computer simulation of driving, the grainy skinned individual would relish the real thing far more, no matter how crappy the vehicle, at least if is real.

How the person interfaces with the world?

Actively! There’s a restlessness to grainy skin, they can’t be sitting behind a computer all day. If they take an office based job, it will need to have a physical outlet for their energy, visiting clients, attending meetings or they would be constantly doing the rounds and meeting people face to face, socialising around the tea station. A doctor is a good example, it’s an active job, moving about, meeting patients.

How to make the sale / pull / befriend? Something physical would work wonders. A shared activity such as bowling, where the grainy skinned person can show off their physical nature, karting for the petrol heads, but a trip on a boating lake would be most enjoyable, or maybe a dancing class where you can get close and physical in an organised setting and feel the way each of you move. This stuff matters to grainy skin holders.

Coarse

What does it feel like?

Coarse skin is quite very obvious to those with silky and paper hands, it feels hard and calloused, thick and unyielding, like the skin on the heel of your foot.

Coarse skin palms have few lines, clearly marked, almost as if carved out of a block of wood. These individuals are not emotionally strung out. They are steady ships and they don’t indulge in drama lightly.

Where are they commonly found?

As I’m very conscious of skin types whenever I shake hands with others, and I’m always looking for unusual placements. I’m quite expecting to see coarse hands on a fisherman or carpenter, someone physically tough, resilient, and able to work with their hands, but when I meet an accountant with coarse hands, I can’t help asking myself whether they might be better suited in a more active profession.

Many coarse handed people seek jobs which provide them with the money and status they seek, but if they’re honest with themselves, they would much prefer a more active, physical job. If they do work in a very sedentary role, they will need to visit the gym daily to work out some of that physical energy.

They would be better suited to some kind of outdoor pursuit, taking people up mountains or if coupled with an artistic flair, a landscape gardener might be a good role.

Construction has its fair share of coarse hands. Coarse hands have a high pain threshold and can tolerate the elements and tough physical work.

How the person interfaces with the world?

Coarse handed people are thick skinned, and as such maybe don’t pick up on the mood in the room, perhaps are not suited to diplomacy or consulting where reading Clients is of paramount importance. They might be described by more fine skinned colleagues as blunt, abrupt, uncouth.

The are non nonsense, are not easily bamboozled by narratives. They know what they know, and you’re not going to dissuade them easily. Politicians do not appreciate these kinds of people as they cannot be swayed easily by their propaganda. They understand the world from a place of needs being met. Family and pets are important, as is shelter, food, and having their sexual needs met. Money is a means to these ends rather than an end in itself.

How to make the sale / pull / befriend?

To make connections work, keep your conversation in the physical realm, don’t talk about thoughts and feelings, and keep your statements based upon reality rather than ‘options’ or the possible.

Coarse skin means being practical, physical needs being met, and being involved in something useful. Technology is tolerated because it is useful, but these are not gadget lovers for the sake of it so don’t extol the virtues of your new iPhone or AirPods.

If you date a coarse skinned person, do not expect them to be won over by flowers, candlelight and Kenny G, they’re much more likely to be won over by overt sexual signalling, strong eye contact, provocative clothing and gestures, and if they’re interested, they’ll pick you up and take you straight to bed.
