I Want a Different Fantasy Story

The traditional imagery comes with built-in bias. Image: http://goo.gl/i8JUcD

I want to read fantasy story where the traditional tropes about light as good and dark as evil are flipped.

I want to read a story where the Demons descend from above in a blinding halo of light, dressed in all white, with wings and skin as white as freshly fallen snow. No one likes the light, but everyone knows it’s necessary. Days where the sun beats down relentlessly are avoided. Children tell scary stories about the Demons. They blind you with sunlight and snatch you up in the second you can’t see. Some regard this as child’s play. Others know there’s truth behind every fable.

I want to read a story where and Angels dwell deep within the Earth, skin red as clay, brown as freshly tilled soil, or black as newly formed obsidian. Their wings a gradient of color, starting at the light gray of a storm cloud and ending at the black of the darkest nights. Services to honor the Angels are held at dusk. Festivals to thank them for harvests go well into the night. No one is afraid of the dark. Darkness is cherished, welcomed. Cloudy days that block out the sun are preferred. Storms that feed the Earth are celebrated.

Maybe this story already exists somewhere and I just haven’t found it yet. If so, I’ll just look harder. In the end, what I really want is this flip on the conventional trope to become popular, if not the norm.
