‘Triple 9’ is about some desperate criminals who team up with some dirty cops to rob a bank. Then some bad shit happens and they’re forced to perform another heist, but this time in order to adequately distract the good cops, they plan to murder an officer, thus being able to call in a
“triple 9,” which is police code for “officer down.” And that’s why the movie’s called ‘Triple 9,’ see?

Of course I just made the story about ten times less complicated then it often is, and the convoluted nature of this tale occasionally makes what should be a tight little exercise in gritty suspense a bit trying on your attention span. Still, John Hillcoat (who helmed the excellent western ‘The Proposition’) can direct the hell out out of an action sequence, and overall this is certainly a better-than-average crime-thriller. Also this movie stars goddamn everyone, and everyone’s pretty good in it. My favorite performances though were those of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet (as a baddie, what fun!).
