Left MyEtherWallet / Right MetaMask

MyEtherWallet

It can be used to manage ETH and all ERC20 tokens.
This also makes it attractive for fraudsters, so there are more and more spamming warnings about pishing websites that look like the original.

Usually there are only small deviations in the URL.
Metamask serves as a minimalist wallet.

For this reason, My etherwallet suggests the recommended uses, in this case MetaMask, as it is the best wallet and the easiest to manage wallet.

Metamask is a plugin for all common browsers. The first supported browsers were Chrome and Brave, later Firefox and Opera were added.

What a minimalist wallet is will also be explained in a later blog post to make it easy to understand. MetaMask is your virtual, Etherum-based bank account, only without a bank.

To install Metamask, go to http://metamask.io and download the Metamask plugin available for your browser.
In this case I use the Metamask plugin for the Chrome browser.

Click on in my case “Get Chrome Extension” (picture 1)
Click on add (picture 2) and then on add extension (picture 3).

Then Metamask (picture 4) will be installed and a new window will open.
After you have installed the plugin, you should now see the MetaMask fox head in the upper right corner of your browser (picture 5).
If you now click on the fox head, a hint will open if you want to use the new Metamask version or the old one. We use the new one and go to Try it now (picture 6).

Now another browser window opens, where we click on Next (picture 8).
Here we assign any password with at least 8 characters, confirm it and click on Create (picture 9).
Now you see your individual Blockies symbol, which reflects your future Wallet identity on the Ethereum network (picture 10).
These are not intended to replace user profile images, but as security icons to allow the user to more easily verify that an address they wish to interact with is the correct one.

In the next picture you have to read the terms of use (picture 12) or scroll down (picture 13) to accept them.
Accept the privacy notice (picture 14) and the phishing warning (picture 15).

If you click on the castle in the grayed out field, your SEED will be displayed with 12 words.

Now we come to the heart of the whole.
The Secret Backup phrase, Seed for short.

IMPORTANT: Write off Seed (not digital) and keep it safe!!!!!
It is best to make 2 copies and store them in different, safe places.
The seed is needed for a backup.

With this Seed you can restore the wallet you created here with any PC or Ethereum App that supports the Seed.

To complete the creation of the wallet, you must now enter the seed phrases exactly as you copied them before (picture 17).
Just click on the words in the correct order (picture 18).
Only then can you continue to click on Confirm (picture 19).

Now your wallet has been created and you can make various settings.
Your bank account based on crypto currency is ready.

Here you can see your MetaMask Wallet with the main account in our case with the name Account 1, as it will be called with you, and the account balance at ETH, which is naturally 0 with a new account ;-).

With a click on Details, you can directly change the name of the wallet as you like, I’ll rename it to “Servus” now. By clicking directly on the address, it will be copied immediately into the clipboard of your computer according to the copy paste principle. In the upper right corner you can switch between the Mainnet (main network with real money) and the Testnets. Maybe I’ll do another tutorial for you.

Here you can create several wallet addresses (account numbers) after the main account. Just imagine that each address in this wallet is the same as if you had different accounts at the bank with different IBAN numbers.

You can also import wallets using Private Key or JSON files, but beware. In the case of a new installation, these will not be restored with the word Seeds mentioned at the beginning, since they are independent external wallets. So still save the Private Key or the JSON files separately.

Ledger Nano and Trezor connection is also supported with the new Metamask, but only one account of each hardware wallet is supported. Under my accounts you will always find the account to the right of the name.
If it is a Metamask address only the name is there.
If it is an imported address via Private Key etc., then the name is next to the name (Import) and for a Hardware Wallet (Hardware).

Now you can also use Metamask to login to Myetherwallet (picture 22).

After selecting MetaMask and clicking on Connect to MetaMask, you will now see your account address selected in MetaMask in the MyEtherwallet browser view (picture 23).
By clicking on Show all Tokens you mean all tokens that exist on the Ethereum network.
The advantage of Metamask is reflected in the security that the private key never leaves the PC on which Metamask is installed.

I hope this description was helpful and you are looking forward to the next article.
