At 5:30 AM Pacific Time (which is a beyond strange time to announce nominees, might I say) on January 24th, the nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were announced.

And of course, I have quite a bit to say.

Overall, I’m moderately satisfied with the nominees announced. Obviously there are movies and actors I wish could have gotten more recognition — we will get to those — but with so many categories and so many nominations, there were bound to be gems released last year to not have been included.

The thing I’m most happy with is All Quiet on the Western Front getting the 2nd most nominations of the night with 9, including Best Picture, Best International Film, and Best Cinematography. The Edward Berger-directed anti-war masterpiece was my favorite movie of last year, and I never expected it to get a nomination for Best Picture. Thankfully, I was proven wrong. I would have liked to see Felix Kammerer get a nomination for Best Actor, but it isn’t a big deal. I’m sure it’ll win Best International Film and maybe Best Cinematography. Best Picture is one I’m not so sure about, but you never know.

The film with the most nominations with 11 is, predictably, Everything Everywhere All At Once. And rightfully so, in my opinion. It’s perhaps the biggest…
