Review | “Shotgun Wedding” Should Have Been Called Off

Shotgun Wedding is a straight-to-streaming romantic action-comedy produced by Amazon Studios, and it’s about as generic as you think it is. The Jason Moore-directed film blends recent releases The Lost City and Ticket to Paraside together in a way that could have maximized the charm and adventure that those films brought to the table, but a bare-bones script and severely lacking action keeps the film from achieving greatness.

The film follows Darcy and Tom, played by Jennifer Lopez and Josh Dumahel respectively. The couple are about to get married in the Philippines when a group of pirates attacks and holds the guests hostage in order to bribe Darcy’s dad into giving them $45 million. Darcy and Tom must navigate the tropical forests and beaches, armed pirates, as well as their troubled relationship in order to survive.

By far the funniest part of this romantic action-comedy is Jennifer Coolidge of Legally Blonde and The White Lotus fame. Coolidge play’s Tom’s mother Carol, and she’s really funny at times. Her line delivery feels like lines your crazy drunk aunt who knows too much would say, and Coolidge sells the moments of humor really well.

The two leads in Lopez and Dumahel are a bit of a letdown in all honesty. They don’t have as much charm compared to other pairings in recent memory, like Bullock…
