2019: New Beginnings

A new year and an old tradition – the new year walk.

Sometimes, some things never change.

And having done a walk on the 1st of January in 2016, 2017, and 2018, we continued the tradition in 2019.

Today, we had a 17 mins drive to the National Trust site at Sharpenhoe Clappers. Even though it was a struggle getting out of the house this morning (stayed up too late last night watching the London fireworks and unwisely, Jools annual Hootenanny), weather-wise, it was the perfect day for walking! Not too cold, clear skies with zero chance of rain, and good company (probably the largest turnout so far with about six other families showing up).

How many 🐑

One striking thing about Sharpenhoe is that if you start at the Carpark (most likely your starting point), and walk a few metres, you’re guaranteed to find yourself at this beautiful picturesque summit – right at the beginning of your tour.

It means after only a few minutes, it becomes immediately visible why this ancient woodland is judged as one of ‘Chilterns area of outstanding natural beauty’. You are served gorgeous views of the countryside; rolling hills, luscious green land dotted with what can only be farmhouses, and villages as far as your eye can see.

Another dad said to me; this is the sort of sight you get after walking hours and hours to get to the mountaintop. It’s that amazing.

Enjoying the ‘walk’

Another interesting thing about today’s walk, our kickoff time was 10am, and while we had pretty much finished just before mid-day, it felt like it ended too soon. It was just such a lovely day to walk and I couldn’t help but feel we could all have gone on for a little bit longer.

Nope, not forgetting it’s a new year – not at all! I wish you what I desire for myself and my family – a year filled with reasons to laugh in joy and happiness, and above all; to be in good health. Happy New Year!
