Roanoke is about stories unwritten. Romantic tales of independence. Of mystery. Of guts and the proud spot of being first. Roanoke is an entrepreneurial exploration into unknowns. And our favorite part, into challenges unsolved.
This is the new uniform for that spirit. Go boldly. Go early. Wear the look with confidence. It’s why we made it.
We also made Roanoke because we want to redefine the “Unicorn.” Although we think getting a billion-dollar valuation is exciting for a growing private company, we believe hitting a billion dollars in payroll is exciting for the world. We want to be the uniform for that, too. We don’t see amassed wealth or value being the symbol of success. We believe it’s payroll.
We are committed to that. Sure, we want to have a billion dollars in sales someday soon. But for us, that means we will have created thousands of jobs. For every piece we sell, we are putting $50 directly back into the workforce. If it means we’ve sold enough to bring on more full-time employees, that’s what we’ll do. If it means supporting the gig economy with hourly freelancers, we’ll do that. But let us be clear: Fifty bucks from every jacket is going directly to employment before we take a nickel of profit. And when people wear Roanoke, we want them to both celebrate how we want a unicorn redefined and aspire to do it in their own workplace.
Back to the jacket itself. We built Roanoke because we saw a big gap where fashion played second fiddle to function. It grew more and more frustrating to see dumpy outerwear just hanging off peoples’ bodies when all too often clothing manufacturers sacrificed a sharp look in exchange for frumpy comfort.
We set out to design this unisex jacket around features. A hood built-in panels, not half-shells, so it sits naturally and comfortably around your head through gusts of wind or blowing rain.
When it needs to be a little tighter, our drawstrings snug up cleanly. At each end of the drawstring sits the aglets, which we named cleats, industrially designed to easily interlock with a patented ‘pin and magnet’ system. Now it’s easy to swap out or re-string drawstrings effortlessly. Plus, they’re just fun to fiddle with when they are not in use.
The deep pockets are hidden in the side seams of the jacket so they don’t gape open when unzipped. We designed one of the pockets for security. Built with an RFID shield, it protects phones, IDs, hotel room keys, and credit cards from bad guys with scanners.
We liked Roanoke so much, we didn’t take it off. So we needed to build one for indoors, too. We made something easily dressed up with sharp lines and a fitted shape. Our prototypes have already become the new look for a few tech workers in our Seattle neighborhoods. Now we’re ready to share it with the world.
Roanoke was drafted and prototyped in Los Angeles after Creativity Solves Everything developed a design brief with fashion-starved tech leaders in San Francisco and the Pacific Northwest. The project was completed with venture funding after being banned by Kickstarter because we supported it internally. (Whoops.) Specs and product images are available here. We’re excited for you to take a look. And we’re even more excited to put people to work.
