A portrait photo of a young woman with short wavy hair smiling at the camera. At the base of the photo frame are the words, ‘her luminosity ever-present, the golden warmth of her radiant smile’.
my godmother in her younger years — text added in PowerPoint

She was their golden pearl
a rare find as many would say
her luminosity ever-present
brightened the dullest of dull days

Cultivated in a small country town
an oyster shell if you will
midst the swaying golden heads
of vast fields of cereal

Her brothers called her ‘Little Sis’
one of them was my dear dad
she melted their big-bro hearts
taught them to be tender and kind

She was my beloved godmother
petite, neat, always in style
she had a unique specialness about her
a golden warmth in her radiant smile

For my twenty-first birthday
all those many years ago
she gave me a golden pearl necklace
a forever treasured memento
