I want to respect your wishes, but you are in deep pain
You are not my blood relative
But you are my family
Life has dealt you one, two, no three hard blows in a row
You want to be left alone to grieve
But I see you sinking fast
Can I throw you the rope you threw me?
It pulled me up from the quicksand of despair
Let me say the words you need to hear
You whispered them to me as I cried
May I hold your hands as they tremble
You held mine as I tried to push you away
This time I will not respect your wishes
Just as you did not respect mine to let me wither
I’m here and I will not leave you alone
Respect the fact that I love you enough to stay

Thank you, Paper Poetry, for this delicious prompt
