It was the yellow-eyed black kitten that caught her eye
The children were laying in a tent as the kitten played
The little thing swirled around her feet
Mewing sadly, hungry-thin-small
The children matched the kitten, grey, thin, and underfed
Lying there blinking in the dim light
She raced away, her blinking stopping the tears
Back she came, cat and children’s food in multiple bags
Openhearted, not caring what others thought about her skirt in the dirt
She fed the small ones until their tummies were full
Now the kids lay in the tent, full, the content kitten in their arms
She walked away plotting how to feed them again tomorrow

Written in response to the wonderful O is for October prompt in Paper Poetry.
