Jake with Près de Moi drawing, Hong Kong, 15 June 2024 (author’s photo)

“Tic tac, tic tac”, his little paws bounce,
the next second he is right by your flounce.
As he sits beside you, gazes at you with his big brown eyes
all you see is a million sunrises.

“Ha ha, ha ha”, his breaths speak his excitement,
everytime you put him on a leash, ‘cause he knows it’s time for amusement.
Never will you ever need a reminder, ‘cause it’s your greatest pleasure,
to walk abreast of him on the streets, which now seem a thousand times brighter.

The moment you find him waiting by the bathroom door,
one you wish you could hold evermore.
The moment he leans on you on the sofa,
one you swear you would never be a bolter.

Will all of this ever end?
Either way I will follow you till the end.
Hold you tight every moment we spend,
and say, “I love you, my forever friend.”

Près de moi, watercolor on paper, featuring Jake (the husky), Ginger (the cat), and Brun (the bear)
