Greetings to our Paper Poetry friends,

As I flipped the calendar over to September, I paused to reflect on what that simple action signified. For me, in my part of the world, it was bidding farewell to Winter and welcoming Spring. For others, it’s the flip side — Summer transitioning to Autumn.

I thought about it more broadly and how our world — my world — is in a perpetual state of flux. So much drama, change, and uncertainty surrounds us, overwhelms us, controls us, when what we so often crave is stability to help us feel grounded — help us stay sane, connected, and nourished — help us move forward in the hope, promise, reward of a brighter, lighter future.

I thought about the prompt Suntonu and I had decided on for September and realised how appropriate it was. In this season of change, in this perpetual state of flux, we have a basic need for a constant we can rely on.

How basic is bread!

How awesome is bread!

Bread is a hero!

I’ll return to the heroics of bread and our prompt shortly, but first we must celebrate a few of our very own poetry heroes — our gold medal champions in Paper Poetry’s Poetry
