Cherry tree

They dance under the cherry tree every night

and sing songs of yore.

Of how samurais slew dragons

and how emperors were enthroned.

When fish walked the land

and humans were thrown,

onto the earth by the gods

to satisfy the anger they bore.

The valiant fought some wars

and even still more

to claim what was righteously theirs

and to etch their names on stone.

In the mountains did

monks hide and live for a thousand years

and their disciples were taught,

the secret to happiness and good health

and farmers reaped and sowed their seeds

and the rice was harvested to feed

the people of this country,

the land of the rising sun

and now they sing songs,

about this great nation

and its history of aeons.
