Privilege

Words, with their softness and might

Letting us ache in desolation

Art on walls

With a tumultuous weight

Upon them

Every reason we have

To form tragedies

From the wreckage of our lives

A distraction from the purpose

We seek in vain.

Tears shed in abandon

For souls a world away

Guilt

Stamped on our foreheads

The blessing of being born

On this side of history

Turned sour by blame

We are held accountable.

A thought

A prayer

For everything we cannot be

Nothing but our hearts in synchrony

Nothing but the shared light of humanity

Vanishing on this road

A whispered hope

For everyone we wept for

A plea for forgiveness

For this liberty we carry

Endeavour

To find a way

To make it matter

For this lucky ache in us

To be worth something.
