Choosing a book is much more difficult than reading one. And so, here are a few recommendations for you to make the most of this period!!

  1. Love at First Bite: Tales From a Veterinary Life by Dr. Yair Ben Ziony

Genre: Non-fiction, Memoirs, Animals

This book is a collection of experiences of Dr.Yair Ben Ziony, an Israeli veterinarian.

Though largely bounded to Israel and Iran, these stories are universal and relatable. They give us vicarious moments of joy and sorrow alike. Each tale is a charming take on the unsophisticated lives of the two-legged masters and their beloved charges. Often it transpires into a satire, mocking at us humans and our ridiculous expectations. Dr Ziony gives precise insights into the challenging, exciting and often strenuous job of a veterinarian. Ever wondered how it would be if ‘honour of the family’ resided in the vulva of a cow??Sounds familiar? Pick the book to find out!

2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Genre: Young Adult Fiction, Historical fiction

Beyond its intriguing title, The Book Thief is an equally, if not more, fascinating book.

The story is narrated by death and deals with how death experiences life. The protagonist is Liesel Meminger, a young girl who starts stealing books for reasons personal to her and peculiar to others. Set in 1939–1942 Germany, the book also traces the tumultuous life of the citizens and how they cope with the ongoing war. It is a roller-coaster ride of emotions; moments of exhilaration, pain and thrills. The Book Thief provides a much needed respite in the present time- hope and the will to lead a better life.

3. Small Sacrifices by Ann Rule

Genre: Crime, Drama, Trial drama

Small Sacrifices is a true account of the unfortunate turn of events that drove a young mother Diane Downs to try murder her three children.(This is not a spoiler) Is it possible to enjoy a crime thriller knowing the murderer, the case and all clues in the beginning itself? Yes it is, so affirms this ‘Small Sacrifices’. The unfolding events are more blood-curdling than the event in itself. Celebrated true crime author Ann Rule sums up passion, romance, motherhood, loyalty all in her book and presents it in an embellished manner and you won’t be disappointed!

4. Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide by J K Rowling

Genre: Fantasy

Disclaimer: NOT FOR MUGGLES!

Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide is the perfectly reliable portkey to the paradise of Potterheads: Hogwarts! This is an e-book and a compilation of various articles written by J K Rowling on the official Wizarding World website. From King’s Cross to Hogwarts, the author reveals many secrets of the castle unknown even to Professor Dumbledore. You get a peek into the Hufflepuff common room, The Great Lake and many more which were not much discussed in the Potter series.

So why dither? Accio books!

Happy Reading!
