A year ago today was the world’s first decentralized launch of a proof-of-stake network, the Cosmos Hub. The memorable “go-live date” started on March 13th, 2019 at 23:00 UTC with validators and community members participating from all over the world. The Cosmos Hub mainnet launch was two years in the making and the first phase of a three-phase rollout of the Cosmos Network, aka the “Internet of Blockchains”.
The next two phases of the Cosmos Network were (2) enabling ATOM transfers — completed in April 2019 — and (3) a production-ready Inter-blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. IBC is the remaining element that we’re still working on. The IBC spec was determined in June 2019 by members of Agoric, All in Bits (dba Tendermint), and the Interchain Foundation teams. A demo and public IBC testnet will be coming soon — stay tuned.
The Cosmos Hub has had an incredibly busy year that includes:
- Three successful mainnet launches, culminating in Cosmos Hub-3
- Multiple millions of blocks validated over three mainnets
- A decentralized community of 125 mainnet validators
- An average of ~7s per validated block
- 15 on-chain governance proposals created and voted on
- 300,000+ ATOMs added a community pool

Interchain.FM new episode
Last week, the team was speaking with Ryan John King, co-founder and CEO of FOAM. FOAM Location is an open web3 protocol powered by an incentivized network of low power radios that offer secure location services independent of GPS and allows user to control and own their data in a privacy preserving way.
Location services are an integral part of the global economy, but GPS technology is starting to show its limits. Issues like spoofing, multipathing, signal outages, third party collection and sale of user data and a fundamental lack of location authenticity are suppressing further marketplace growth for location services. The FOAM Location network provides a leading web3 solution with secure, fault tolerant and ubiquitous location services by combining an immutable blockchain ledger, self-synchronizing low-power radios, and a token incentive mechanism.
ETHDenver2020 was a blast!

IBC and Game of Zones
Start preparing yourself for the Game of Zones competition by following Zaki Manian’s advice:
- Learn to use the relayer: think about how to run it as a high throughput service.
- Learn how to build IBC applications. If you’re interested and need help, Jack Zampolin has made himself available!
You can also join the related channel on the Cosmos Discord server to chat with other people willing to help you get used to IBC and prepared for GoZ.
The Interchain Foundation (ICF) raised $17 million in April 2017 to shepherd the development of the Cosmos network.
“To date, we still have over 1,400 BTC, over 50,000 ETH and just over 20 million ATOMs in the treasury,” ICF director Arianne Flemming says. At today’s prices, that’s worth over $104 million. And that’s even after the nonprofit deployed $25 million in capital to fund over 50 projects.

The Tendermint Core team has decided to share its goals and roadmap for 2020. What follows is a list of their objectives for the year, organized around four high-level goals, which are themselves ordered by approximate priority. However, the team plans to tackle pieces of each of these goals concurrently.
This list is ambitious: It is possible, even likely, that there’s more outlined here than they can achieve in a year. If you are interested in helping the team reach these goals, they’ll be opening up a few new positions soon.
Goal 1: Increase the number of people who can make substantive contributions to Tendermint Core
Goal 2: Ship features and fixes which help Tendermint Core retain its market-leading position
Goal 3: Improve the developer- and user-experience for projects that use Tendermint Core
Goal 4: Expand and curate the number of technologies that can be integrated with Tendermint Core
The following milestones will require voting by on-chain governance.
Proposal Passed: Atom Transfers
An upgrade proposal may be created on the Cosmos Hub to add support for IBC, the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol. IBC will allow other Cosmos SDK-based blockchains to connect to the Hub. Read more »
Proposal Passed: IBC
Success! The Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol is now supported by the Cosmos Hub. The IBC standard will allow blockchains that support it to connect.
At this point, the critical features of the Cosmos Hub has been activated by the community of Atom holders. Further governance of the network and upgrades to the software or blockchain state are left to the community. Read more »
Due by May 01st, 2020 73% complete:
IBC v1.0.0 issues left to be implemented (on ibc-alpha branch).
Akash Partners with Solana to Bring Web-Scale Smart Contracts to Supercloud: By interoperating with Solana, Akash users will soon be able to run secure and scalable smart contracts on Solana’s hyper-performance platform and pay using Akash Token (AKT). Whereas Solana’s users will soon be able to run distributed applications (like machine learning or web apps) and settle using Solana Token (SOL) on Akash.
Additionally, Akash will provide first-class support for Solana’s validators to run nodes in highly secure and scalable environments.
Currently, validators have little to no option other than to run their nodes on centralized cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. 60% of Ethereum nodes currently run on AWS and other centralized cloud service providers. This threatens decentralization at the core. Validators have few alternatives and are forced to make a massive upfront investment in talent, servers, and flexible scalability or choose the big cloud. By leveraging Akash decentralized cloud, Solana’s validators will no longer be required to do this, and they’ll be able to stay decentralized. This is a win-win scenario for both Solana’s and Akash’s users.
In the latest episode of OK Let’s Chat, Alex sat down with Osuri to discuss his work on this innovative token project:
Bitsong continues to test and prepare for a mainnet.
Mainnet launched today:

The Kava Oracle Roadmap: This article’s purpose is to provide a high level overview of Kava’s approach to oracles and the vision for how Kava’s use and integration with oracle solutions will evolve overtime.
Kava Development Update: The Kava engineering team has been making great strides as they approach important milestones on Kava roadmap. In this development update, the team dives into what they’ve accomplished and what’s ahead for Kava’s multi-asset DeFi platform.
They shipped Kava Testnet 4000 with CDP functionality. This major milestone provided a valuable testing ground for catching bugs, improving docs, and getting feedback from early adopters.
They added an additional engineer, John Maheswaran, to the team. John brings a deep knowledge of cryptography and distributed systems from his Ph.D. work at Yale and has worked in the enterprise blockchain space as a lead engineer for the last few years.
Thoughts from Kava’s Lead Engineer on MakerDao Situation by Kevin Davis, a co-lead architect of Kava’s cross chain DeFi platform and helped build the core components of Kava’s CDP module.
Band Protocol price data has been successfully integrated into Kava feed module. Band’s oracles will provide secure price feed data for collateral tokens BTC/USD, XRP/USD, BNB/USD & ATOM/USD in support of Kava’s cross-chain CDP platform and stablecoin.

Introducing Terra Ecosystem Grants: The Terraform Labs team announced a series of grants in order to improve ecosystem tools and products as well as to provide an overall better environment for community members. That being said, the Terra team will be starting the Grant Program by rolling out four RFPs alongside an open community suggestion form.
The first two RFPs are in relation to a new type staking product, which they call Anchor, that requires both a new derivative token and a lending pool. The team has noticed that despite high returns for staking Luna, there has been a lack of staking by users due to the volatile nature of Luna’s prices. In light of this problem, Terraform Labs would like to design a solution where the initial deposit principal is protected. To accomplish this goal, they will be looking for partners capable of understanding and implementing the bLuna token and the fungible money market.
- bLuna RFP — https://medium.com/terra-money/terra-anchor-rfp-form-1-50ae6e5b8502
- Lending pool RFP — https://medium.com/terra-money/terra-anchor-rfp-form-2-8b07d80a9365
The next RFP is concerned with reducing the time to resync a node in the event of data corruption through the utilization of a data backup service.
- Data Backup Service RFP — https://medium.com/terra-money/terra-data-backup-rfp-form-979544603e4
- Infrastructure RFP — https://medium.com/terra-money/terra-infrastructure-rfp-form-8d1fbb99c61d
Suggestions by community members in Terra Discord server or Twitter community often give the Terra team insightful pieces of advice that they have never considered before. They believe that in order for more use cases to arise, the community must be at the forefront focus. Thus the team would like to also leave an open RFP, where any community member is welcome to suggest any ideas that we may have overlooked as well.
- Community Suggestions — https://medium.com/terra-money/terra-open-suggestion-rfp-form-f0f110e8ef93
Please send all proposals/inquiries to firstname.lastname@example.org, and note that the deadline for submission is April 24, 2020.
THORChain Weekly Dev Update for Week 18–23 Mar 2020:
The team spent last week validating THORChain’s ability to start, churn up to 12 nodes, then back down to 4 nodes, initiate a Ragnarök and complete a shutdown. The team were able to achieve a full-life cycle at the end of the week, and many small bugfixes were made along the way.
In addition, the team completed the last of Certik’s Audit report fixes, as well as implementing Blame into THORChain.
Testing continues on BEPSwap, with the bulk of the work in adding BigNumbers.js to BEPSwap which required a full re-write of core arithmetic functions.
Testing and QA flows on to tweaks and additions to Midgard API — which is difficult to test until connected to BEPSwap, since a lot of what Midgard outputs is user consumable.
Delphi Digital wrote a 30 page report on THORChain, covering the system, tokenomics, security, and comparisons with other platforms.
Liquid Staking call by Chorus One scheduled on Wed, 25th March at 4pm CET.
34 Flow: A Blockchain by and for Smart Contract Developers with Dieter Shirley: In the last Chorus One podcast episode, Felix is joined by Dieter “dete” Shirley, CTO at Dapper Labs. The team at Dapper Labs, a spin-off from Axiom Zen, are the creators of Cryptokitties and have spent recent years to create their own blockchain optimized for decentralized applications building on their learnings of writing some of the most widely used smart contracts.
The podcast begins with Dieter going into his background in crypto and how Cryptokitties emerged out of a series of ideas his former company at Axiom Zen had for blockchain applications. They then talk about how Cryptokitties helped the team realize both the benefits and shortcomings of Ethereum and Solidity development. Dieter explains how Flow is designed from the ground up with composability and developer experience in mind. They go into detail as to how Flow is able to scale by having multiple separate node roles, the interplay between them, as well as benefits that Flow tooling and the programming language Cadence provide to developers. Finally, they wrap up with a discussion of the economics in a blockchain with multiple different roles.
