Decentraland: The SDK 6.1, CryptoKitties in Builder, A Lot of Crypto-Collectibles, Builder Tutorials
Biweekly update 5th June — 19th June
Since Decentraland is not a big crypto company and its community is not so active, there are no essential updates, news and rumors. Nevertheless, the development team had time to point out some changes. First of all, there is a new SDK 6.1 with several fixes and improvements. Secondly, the team provides us with a few tutorials which can be interesting for some amateur developers. And the third thing: Decentraland has teamed up with the Top NFT projects to bring collectibles to the Virtual World. Its team is excited to announce that Decentraland’s new feature for the Builder tool, ‘NFT Picture Frames’, now supports more of crypto collectibles.
Intro
Since this is the first overview of Decentraland, we are pleased to tell you some information about it. Decentraland is a virtual world built on the Ethereum network where players can buy and develop pieces of property, each one represented by an NFT called LAND.
Decentraland’s world lives on the blockchain, not a centralized server, and players truly own their LAND tokens, just like they own their CryptoKitties. That means they can shape the virtual world however they want, knowing their work can never be altered or taken away, and collect 100% of any revenue generated by their creations.
Players can explore the Decentraland Metaverse to discover and enjoy other people’s creations and experiences.
Development
- Realised SDK 6.1
This new version includes a number of significant improvements and new features:
- Shadows
- Better performance
- Jumping (pressing space bar)
- UI elements
Full changelog is here.
The development team has realised some minor changes and improvements in Decentraland’s LAND and Estate smart contracts which are aimed at developers only. But if you know how to make smart-contract at its amateur stage, it will be easy to get turned on by it.
New tutorials
Picture Frames are the latest addition to Decentraland’s Builder; the editing tool players use to create their virtual environments. Picture Frames let Dapper users insert a 2D depiction of a non-fungible token into their creation — like a favourite Kitty!
Here’s how to create your own Picture Frame:
- Navigate to Decentraland’s Builder and log in with your Dapper wallet
- Scroll down the Item Drawer until you find Picture Frames
- Select the Kitty you want to show off and drop it in the place of honor in your digital home!
- This collaboration marks the first time players can integrate their cryptocollectibles into Decentraland’s virtual landscape. Another win for interoperability on the blockchain!
There is a new blogpost, written by Fefo, one of the developers in Decentraland team, which walks you through how you can easily upload and share a preview of a Decentraland scene to a free server! Must admit, it is the tutorial written for developers only. But if you know how to use terminal/command line at its amateur stage, it will be easy to get turned on by it.

Roadmap
Unfortunately, Decentraland does not have the full roadmap. Nevertheless, there is a grand and ambitious vision for the future which includes:
- A P2P network that allows users to interact with each other and the world. This is needed for text messaging, audio conversations, position, avatars, items, and other features.
- A micropayment system, as a core feature, creating an in-world economy. Most of the original team of Streamium, a pioneer on user-friendly cryptocurrency micropayments, is working on Decentraland.
- A land management interface that artists can use to create experiences for visitors without leaving the browser. While in-game, users will be able to develop, buy, rent, and sell virtual estate.
- A scripting language, designed with VR in mind, so landowners can program the experiences they want to offer other users.
