IPFS ecosystem biweekly vol.3,18th February — 3rd March

Why IPFS?

IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) is a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol designed to make the web faster, safer, and more open. It utilizes DHT (distributed hash table) and Merkle DAG (directed acyclic graph) data structures. IPFS uses a protocol similar to BitTorrent to decide how to move data around the network. One of the advanced features of IPFS is that it supports file versioning. To achieve file versioning, it uses data structures similar to Git.

IPFS forms the Content Centric Internet where you access data directly from any server in the world, and works in closed environments disconnected from the Internet. Interplanetary Linked Data makes it possible to access data from any public Merkle-tree like Ethereum.

Here’s how IPFS works

Latest IPFS News

go-ipfs 0.8.0, and Remote Pinning, is here

This release is focused on making it easier to work with pins. There are some new cool features around being able to ask remote services to pin data for you, and modifying large pin sets is much faster than ever before.

Data Storage and Management:

Filecoin

The Filecoin Launchpad Accelerator Demo Day

The Filecoin Launchpad Accelerator, powered by Tachyon, hosted a Demo Day to showcase 13 startups building more interoperable, open, and programmable tools, applications, and infrastructure for the decentralized web. 33 founders from 11 countries participated in an immersive 12-week program bridging the IPFS, Filecoin and Ethereum communities.

The Graph

3Box Labs & Ceramic Network

Fleek

  • The Beta for the Space web app is live. Say hello to user-owned, encrypted, and distributed storage & file sharing. Open-source and built on Open Web protocols.
A Snapshot of the Process. When you upload a file or host a site on IPFS, Fleek will begin to package them into batches and ready them to be stored in Filecoin.

Computation & Trust Layers:

Humanode

  • Attack on Sybil: In this article, Humanode co-founder Dato gives a brief overview of the Sybil-defenses and describes Humanode’s approach. If you want to learn why peer-to-peer systems with equal distribution of validation power are vulnerable to Sybil attacks and if there are ways to fight them then you might find it helpful.

Integrations/ Collaborations:

Brave

  • BAT Roadmap 2.0: The roadmap includes adding the ability to use BAT for content pinning on IPFS, and more.

Cloudflare

  • MSIgnite 2021 started yesterday and the Cloudflare Digital Showcase page is full of interesting videos and assets that will help you learn how they can help you improve your website performance, increase accessibility and enhance security.

Infura

  • How to Build on the Filecoin Network Using the Infura API: Want to jump into Filecoin and start building something? This tutorial will get you up and running quickly by creating a simple Node.js script using Infura and the Filecoin network.
  • The Infura Team is Ready for the Berlin Fork: The upcoming Berlin fork brings various optimizations for contracts including gas efficiencies, updates to how code is read by the Ethereum Virtual Machine and other changes to protect against DDOS attacks. Running Your Own Node? Get Fork-Ready. Using Infura? No Changes Required.

Textile

  • A path towards non-custodial portfolio management: That was the question that the Portex team set out to solve recently at EthDenver. They recently published a blog post detailing their project results. After a week of hacking, their solution was a slick application that combines Textile Threads, IPFS, and IDX in a simple but exciting way. The drivers for them to build with this stack were nice and clear.

Pinata

This is the first one in a three-part tutorial:

-Creating the contract and minting a token

-Creating an app to view NFTs created through this contract

-Creating a marketplace to transfer NFTs to others while also transferring the NFT’s underlying assets on IPFS

Handshake

The Shake: Feb. 28, 2021: fresh weekly recap of the Handshake ecosystem and protocol.

  • TLD Investing. A discussion with Jehan Chu of Kenetic Capital on his firm’s $84k acquisition of .NFT and investing in Handshake domains.
  • Connext Namespace. Last week, the scaling network announced plans to use .connext namespace as a step towards decentralization. Now, cross swap stablecoin arbitrage highlighted its potential as a layer two agnostic liquidity aggregator. Connext will soon work across Handshake namespace as a phone book for liquidity.
  • On The Brink. Tieshun Roquerre, CEO of Namebase, joined Nic Carter and Matt Walsh of Castle Island Ventures for a deep dive on Handshake.
  • HandyCon. The first Handshake conference was announced for March 10–11.
  • Our Network. HNS was featured in the data analytics newsletter, Our Network.
  • ShakeDex Auctions. The first decentralized, trustless, non-custodial secondary market name auctions are beginning on Handshake. Kurumi of ShakeDex is coordinating a schedule for the first mainnet auctions. But, of course, the protocol is permissionless so you can create an auction using the shakedex CLI / Bob Wallet.
  • HNSsearch. The Handshake search engine is now out of Beta and officially launched. You can help with future features by leaving your own suggestions or upvote existing ones.
  • Decentralized VPN. Sentinel, the dVPN network on Cosmos, will be focusing resources towards integrations with Handshake.
  • Name Metrics. Per Namebase Stats, there are nearly 9k names in use — which Namebase measures as registered names with modified DNS settings. Last week’s secondary sale of 🙄 / for 60,000 HNS represents the third largest secondary market sale to date. Now, five of the top ten secondary sales on Namebase are emojis.
  • HNS Metrics. Total HNS Locked has surpassed 50M HNS, which equates to ~14% of circulating supply currently escrowed as bids in name auctions.
  • Namebase Metrics. When the Namebase Marketplace launched as a secondary market for names, Namebase facilitated $5,000 worth of sales per week. Now, they facilitate $5,000 worth of sales every 3 hours.

Unstoppable Domains

  • Unstoppable Domains’ plans for a scalable blockchain domain infrastructure: The team is building the world’s first scalable layer 2 solution for blockchain domains. This new infrastructure will allow them to issue and make updates to domains at a pace (and price) multiple orders of magnitude better than what they can do today. Improved domain issuing and updating unlocks the true potential of the decentralized web. The team is targeting August 2021 as the launch date of the updated domain system.

Audius

  • Introducing AUDIO Badges: Now, users that hold AUDIO in their Audius account are eligible for profile badges — visible throughout the app that unlocks new features as they’re released. This release is one of the first in AUDIO’s long list of feature access use-cases, many of which the team covered in a recent blog post. For more information on Audius and what it means to truly own the platform you create value for, check out this primer.
  • Audius new milestone: 3M monthly active users:

Peergos

  • Simple decentralized web hosting on Peergos: You can now easily host your P2P website directly from Peergos. No need for DNS or a TLS certificate, and you get a human readable location — it couldn’t get any simpler.
