Stellar: Blockchain Education Alliance with Stellar and Collaboration with Blockchain Academy Mexico

Biweekly update 4th October — 18th October

Stellar will drive blockchain innovation through education: the Blockchain Education Alliance. The alliance’s first members — Stellar Development Foundation, TRON, Hedera, ICON, Ontology, Wanchain, Harmony One, Nervos, Orbs, LTO Network, Emurgo, NEM, and ETC Labs — will work collectively to provide university students with the connections and knowledge necessary to enter the workforce with practicable blockchain skills to contribute to the growing industry. Plus the Stellar Development Foundation is collaborating with Blockchain Academy Mexico, the first institution in Mexico focused on developing and building an innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem, new business models, and initiatives using blockchain infrastructure, to offer new educational opportunities around building on Stellar. More to follow!

About Protocol 12

Protocol 12 creates a new type of offer — path_payment_strict_send — and disables the current inflation mechanism. For more details, check out the Stellar Core v12.0.0 release announcement.

As mentioned above, this version of Horizon doesn’t include any breaking changes, but there are several scheduled in the months following the network upgrade. A few operations will soon be deprecated in favor of new operations. For instance: path_payment will become path_payment_strict_receive in order to parallel the new path_payment_strict_send operation. You can read about the scheduled breaking changes in the release notes.

If you run a validator

You can vote to upgrade the network to Protocol 12 via a stellar-core HTTP Command or by directing an HTTP request via your HTTP client of choice to port 11626.

The stellar-core http-command is:

**/upgrades?mode=set&upgradetime=2019–10–28T16:00:00Z&protocolversion=12**

You can schedule that vote immediately, though it won’t take effect until the specified upgrade time of 10/28/2019 at 1600 UTC. Use the Stellar-core info command to check to see if your node is armed for the upgrade.

Social encounters

Upcoming events:

Meridian is an opportunity to discuss big-picture questions around financial inclusion, efficiency, and innovation. Where are the greatest applications for Stellar in our financial present? What roles will Stellar have in our financial future? How are different countries approaching regulation and compliance? Where can Stellar make the most impact? What can we all do to make building on Stellar easier and more rewarding?

In Mexico City these topics wll be covered, and will be providing opportunities for the Stellar community to meet their counterparts from around the world.

Roadmap

Stellar has just released Horizon v0.20.1, which deploys a completely new ingestion system to enable some experimental features.

What’s next?

In Q3 2019 Stellar will be working on moving all the Horizon features to the new system. It will also publish documentation for the new ingestion package that can be used to build custom, advanced apps, and services without Horizon.

Partnerships and team members

Stellar announced its newest initiative to drive blockchain innovation through education: the Blockchain Education Alliance. MouseBelt will announce an additional 15 members in the near future.

Under MouseBelt’s leadership, the Blockchain Education Alliance will cultivate a network of 20 leaders in both industry and academia to jointly develop educational initiatives to accelerate mass adoption of blockchain technology.

Students are demanding blockchain education. Universities need established experts in the space to help develop curriculum and projects — and Stellar, TRON, Hedera, ICON, Ontology, Wanchain, Harmony One, Nervos, Orbs, LTO Network, Emurgo, NEM, and ETC Labs are well positioned to share valuable knowledge.

The Blockchain Education Alliance is the most recent development of the University Program, which comprises a network of over 67 student blockchain organizations in 14 countries. The University Program has also established partnerships with some of the leading engineering departments worldwide, including at UCLA, UCSB, and UC Davis, through their UC Blockchain Initiative.

This new initiative comes as part of the third semester of the University Program just launched last week. Students in the program get access to educational content, advising, and funding for their student blockchain organizations.

Anyone interested in being apart of the Blockchain Education Alliance can find out more at https://partners.mousebelt.university.

The Stellar Development Foundation is collaborating with Blockchain Academy Mexico to offer new educational opportunities around building on Stellar. Blockchain Academy Mexico is the first institution in Mexico focused on developing and building an innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem, new business models, and initiatives using blockchain infrastructure.
