Better Business by Intentional Design
Our Sustainability Expo was an incredible success last Thursday (5/14) — we had great conversation about the future of business.
A sustainable future requires deliberate effort in design, TODAY.
Remora
Omar Ocasio — founder / CEO of Remora and co-host for the event — explained how their business is developed for sustainability. Remora’s goal was to created state of the art water filtration devices to provide clean drinking water. Without depending on power grids, their device can run self-sufficient and fully green — filtering water continually for communities. It changes lives by providing essential water service for free. They increase quality of life and remaining economically sustainable by selling their machines to governments who want to help their communities.
Remora has some incredible tech, but their impact goes way beyond water. They not only deliver a life-saving product, but they are also passionate about teaching communities. Their goal is to improve lives by educating on sustainable practices. Omar explains the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) and how they influenced his business planning and design with Paradigm. Paradigm is proud to partner with Remora to continue designing sustainable businesses.
Mattrvest
Mattrvest founder, Diane Delava, is concerned with the significant lack of financial planning in our generation. In their research, most millennials are not even investing. Not only does are they are missing out on incredible opportunities, but it is crippling a vital investment market. As the deficit grows, many firms are struggling to reach their target audience.
Mattrvest is designed to help millennials with smart investments.
Diane’s app links banks, research houses, financial advisors, and asset managers to develop resources for you and me. She is clearly passionate about reaching individuals in a meaningful way, creating a non-invasive app to connect and educate.
By not investing, millennials are failing to grow their money for the future.
Mattvest also reduces expenses and increases savings by matching you with relatable, personable opportunities. They are focused on transparency and geared towards responsibly saving for your future.
With a lively BETA community, they are rapidly expanding their sphere of influence. Check out her project and see how they provide sustainable value at mattrvest.com!
FarmEZ
If potatoes were most profitable crop last year, why would farmers plant anything else this year? But choosing wrong can be devastating. In our rapidly changing, global market, even the most rural farmers need up-to-date resources on the best crops and prices. Sasha Ci founded FarmEZ to help poor farmers navigate and anticipate global market fluctuations.
Their app brings market research and strategies to farmers in developing countries. By connecting them with distributers, FarmEZ can advise smart, sustainable choices — maximizing return on crops and optimizing resource usage.
Better planning means overall profitability and quality increase — around the globe. Everyone benefits from a more sustainable agricultural model. Their BETA app is already helping farmers predict prices and plan crops in India and Malesia. They can also apply to receive financial assistance in an effort to create a sustainable supply chain.

LeafUp
Toby Myers started his business to bring money back to coffee farmers. LeafUp gives coffee shops and consumers the chance to rebuild forests while enjoying a better cup of joe. In an effort to save our favorite beverage, consumers and producers pay just 20 cents on each cup sold. LeafUp employs struggling farmers to re-plant trees with this money. The end result is more ground cover, sustainable farming practices, and better coffee for the consumers. Everyone wins and we have hope for the future.
Their company is delivering better crops and higher overall yields. With over 20,000 trees already planned for 2020, LeafUp is poised to improve our coffee supply while turning a profit. See how Toby is working to undo years of over-farming and deforestation at LeafUp.org
So why are there not MORE sustainable companies?
In our post-expo discussion, we focused on this question.
Sustainability is deliberate. Our system (specifically the US status quo) lacks the proper education and planning resources to guide founders.
If we are proactive in planning and executing sustainable business models, there is a better future for everyone. But it starts with us — Founders, CEOs, influencers — to achieve this new level of productivity we have to educate ourselves and others.
