The last pillar standing

The executive presidency, the parliament and the supreme court are the root of power in Sri Lanka, governing all the people.

They are the 3 pillars that hold the country together and separate the county from chaos.

If either of the pillars collapse the country will fall in to chaos and anarchy.

And these pillars should be led by people with a sound mind.

Today we are experiencing a similar situation where the country is hanging on the edge of chaos and anarchy, the presidency has taken absolute power to his own hands and dissolved the government.

The supreme court is the last pillar standing against anarchy and chaos

People have asked the opinion from the supreme court and to make the dissolving of parliament illegal.

Now it is up to the supreme court is reverse the damage that has been done and bring back order to the country.

Today the country is looking forward to see whether the president’s decision to dissolve the parliament is constitutional or not.

The supreme court is the ultimate place and has the power to interpret the constitution. And what the SC interpret today will have its effects for a long time to come.

If by any chance the supreme court decide what the president did was legal then future parliaments are also in danger of being dissolved by the president whenever he feels right.

If the SC decides it is illegal to dissolve the parliament prematurely then it would mean that without a proper majority the Ranil Wickramasinge has chance to win back his prime minister post and can even go as far as impeaching the president.

One can only imagine the pressure the SC judges are at right now, with the whole country watching and the future of the country is at stake, this might be the last chance for people to see if they can win back their democracy.
