Kris Marshall, playing DI Humphrey Goodman, returns to Saint Marie

Beyond Paradise, a spin-off series to the much acclaimed parent series Murder in Paradise, sees Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman return to Saint Marie for the first time since the 2017 episode ‘Man Overboard — Part Two’. Kris Marshall, playing DI Humphrey Goodman, was part of the Murder in Paradise main cast from Series three to series six.

“I was honoured and delighted to return to Guadeloupe as part of Humphrey’s journey in Beyond Paradise, and to rekindle my deep passion for the island,” Kris Marshall said.

Marshall, when he stepped back into his character’s shoes for the Sandy Johnson directed Beyond Paradise series premiere, appeared so comfortable that it was almost as if he hadn’t been away. The only significant difference is of course the setting. Goodman, in the spin-off series, is once again surrounded by likeable characters.

The yet-untitled first series finale episode, directed by Matt Carter from a teleplay penned by Tony Jordan, features the kind of crossover storyline Beyond Paradise fans have wanted since the spin-off series premiered.

Murder in Paradise, on Friday, 24 February 2023, brought the twelfth series to a close with Leon Lopez’s ‘A Calypso Caramba’. Consequently, because of the timing, it’s unlikely the Beyond Paradise first series finale will have any lasting impact on the parent series moving forwards. One can’t help wondering exactly how much of the coming episode will be set on the island.

The BBC, not an organisation known for spilling the metaphorical beans too early, has revealed Marshall’s DI Humphrey Goodman will be back on Saint Marie for the coming first Beyond Paradise series finale. It will deliver the kind of story series fans look for in a crossover event.

The Shipton Abbott police team, in the first series finale, are faced with a seemingly impossible case to crack. A burglary seems clear-cut at first when the thief’s unusual calling card matches that of local criminal Atticus Styles, but when the forensic evidence comes back, it all points to another suspect. There is however one minor issue.

The suspect, Hayley Collins, was locked up in a police cell by PC Kelby Hartford at the time of the crime. Meanwhile, still going over events in his mind, Goodman reconsiders his immediate future in Shipton Abbott…

The Beyond Paradise series finale, available on both BBC One and iPlayer, will be televised on Friday, 7 April 2023 from 20:00 (8pm).
