Body & Geometry
Our views about ourselves always change. Sometimes I think I have a beautiful body: skinny straight legs and nice curves. Other times I think my body is pretty nasty: acne, acne scars all over my skin, and a head too big. This is not limited to our views and judgement about our physical body. It’s true about how we generally perceive ourselves. It depends on through what lenses we are seeing ourselves through, and where our focal points are.
This experiment explores the idea of visualizing how we see ourselves in different ways. I took one of the photos from the photoshoot I did last year. It’s in general a good body picture of myself. The red tinted one uses lines to draw attention to the curves and legs. The blue tinted one uses dots and lines to accentuate the acne plagued skin, the disproportionate head, while dismissing the curves. The contrast between the two might not turn out to be that obvious, but the added geometrical shapes definitely skew the perception of the underlying body.
Abstract geometry and human body are the two graphical topics I’m fascinated with. Playing with them has been an idea for some time. This time, I used simple white geometrical shapes on top of monochromatic photographs, creating a sharp and complementary composition. It’s the interplay of the real and unreal, abstract and concrete, organic and artificial.
