Parenting is hard at the best of times and it’s important to remember that you are doing better than you think you are. Screen time has become extremely prevalent during the pandemic and many parents feel badly about the amount of screen time now used in the home. When you and your family feel up to it, getting outside to play benefits our minds and bodies, not to mention, it’s fun!

Studies show that when children spend more time outside, they are happier and more at ease. For more in depth information check out this article from The Child Mind Institute.

Here are some great outdoor activities you can try with your little ones:

  1. Scavenger hunt — make a list, and let your kids explore and search for different things in nature. You can help them take pictures of each “find” in your smartphone, draw a picture, or make it into a game of “I Spy”.
  2. Do some sidewalk art — grab some sidewalk chalk and create some fun art! Big chunky chalk is easy for small hands to hold onto and is great to encourage fine motor development.
  3. Make a paper boat to float in some puddles or ponds. (Just don’t forget to clean up when you’re done).
  4. Create a playground bucket list, and explore different places to play in your area. Vancouver Playgrounds — is an excellent resource and directory that lists different child-friendly parks and playgrounds in the Vancouver area. Check out this list of 8 Amazing Playgrounds you Simply Must See in Metro Vancouver and don’t miss out the nature inspired Sculptures at Robert Burnaby Park.

It can feel daunting bundling up all the kids for some outside time but whenever you feel up to it, you’ll be glad you did.
