Vancouver is a very rainy city! Let’s make use of our temperate rainforest climate by incorporating the rain into our art. Try this fun rainy day art activity that includes experimenting with and observing colours.

Supplies needed:

  • Watercolour paper, cardstock, or get creative by using a recycled cereal or cardboard box
  • Washable markers
  • If you’re trying this on a non-rainy day, you can use a watering can or a spray bottle on the stream setting to produce a similar effect.

Instructions

  1. Get creative and draw! Let your kiddo make some art on the paper, encouraging them to use as many bright colours as possible. You can join in too and make your own.

2. Place your art out in the rain, and watch what happens. You and your little one can guess what you think will happen to all the colours when they get wet. Depending on how rainy it is outside, you won’t want to leave the paper out too long as it might get washed away.

If you’re trying this on a non-rainy day or inside, you can use a spray bottle, watering can, or even a shower to wet the drawing. (Make sure to set the paper on a towel, or in the bathtub as the paper can get quite messy when the colours start to run.)

3. Let it dry! Keep it as flat as possible — if it’s very wet, the coloured water may drip off the paper. Talk with your kiddo about how the different colours blended and mixed together.
