Sun Safety
With all this glorious sunshine and heat, here are some sun safety tips for children — for a complete article and access to other languages check out healthlinkbc sun safety.
o Try to avoid being in the sun between 10am and 4pm (this is when the sun is the strongest).
o Dress your child in sun smart clothing: cool long sleeved shirts and pants (if you can see through the cloth easily, UV rays can get through too).
o Use a sunscreen with UVA and UVB Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 of more when in the sun — make sure it is approved by the Canadian Dermatology Association. If it is a new sunscreen, do a patch test before applying all over your child.
o Keep babies out of the sun and in the shade as best as you can — babies under 6 months are not recommended to use sunscreen as it can get in their eyes and mouth.
o Make sure to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours or based on the manufacture’s instructions.
o Stay hydrated! Remember to drink lots of water when out in the sunshine.
Stay safe and have fun!
