Do you remember when you just put up a blog and made money?

Back when it all started, it was that easy. You could even use a free one on Blogger.com. And you could monetize it with Google AdSense and make a nice living.

Or you could put Amazon products on it.

Things have changed a bit since. The competition is harder. SEO rules have changed.

If you want to make money blogging in 2023, you need to change your ways, too.

Here are 7 outstanding pieces of advice from a six-figure blogger.

Display ads

It’s still possible to make money by having ads on your blog.

Today, we have not only AdSense. There are other options which I’ll mention in a moment. In order to get paid, though, you need to join an ad network.

Here are the most popular three:

  • Ezoic
  • Mediavine
  • Google AdSense

Bloggers say you can make more money with Mediavine than with any of the two others.

But they have traffic requirements. You can’t get in there if you’re just starting out. Bad news…

You can’t join Google AdSense or Ezoic either.

Google AdSense has no traffic requirements. But they want your blog to be of a certain age and to follow all their guidelines as to having a contact page, etc. You need to check the rules before you apply for an account.

While you could make a nice living with AdSense alone back 15 years ago, today it’s just a sweet little bonus.

Other things are more important. And perhaps THE most important one is that you build an online community. With that you have easy access to making money with other methods.

Such as affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is when you promote somebody else’s product and get a commission if somebody buys.

It can be a sweet little bonus. Or it can be your whole income. It all depends on what you promote and how many you sell.

The vendor sets the commission.

Amazon gives you around 5% depending on the product you promote. The advantage with Amazon is that if someone clicks on your link to buy a hairbrush for $2 and while they are there buys a television, too, you get paid for both. But…

This only happens if your visitor buys on Amazon again within 24 hours.

Still, some bloggers make a nice monthly commission just by sharing Amazon products in their blog posts.

Other vendors, especially of digital products, will give you 50%… sometimes higher commissions.

You can sell those products, which are typically courses or eBooks, directly from your blog by making reviews. And you can sell them to your email subscribers.

Honestly… that’s where the money is.

Sponsorship

Through portals, you can accept sponsorships.

You can write an article with a link to someone else’s homepage and get paid. This used to be profitable. But because of many Google adjustments to their algorithm, it isn’t lucrative anymore.

“Not worth the time,” says the 6-figure blogger.

You’re just trading time for money.

Digital product

Now we’re on my home ground.

You can make money with everything digital on your blog. Like:

  • eBooks
  • Mini guides
  • Audio downloads
  • Planners
  • Templates
  • Checklists
  • Notion templates

The idea is that you make a quick and short version of the above.

Then you test it by giving it away. Is there an interest? Fine. Then you can expand it into a paid, low-ticket offer.

If that sells, you take it one step further. Let’s say you made a $12 goal setting planner and people love it. Now turn that into a full-blown course and charge $297.

Online courses

Online courses is where the real money lies.

Or, as the blogger puts it, “the holy grail of making money online.” Listen to her. She’s right.

One of the first ways I made money online myself was with a course.

People pay not just for the content but also for the personal contact. Even if you don’t reply to comments, it helps them to learn from different methods like reading, listening and watching videos.

If you can make more than one course, you’re good.

Coaching 1to1 Services

Finally, the blogger recommends coaching or other 1to1 services.

Those are well paid, but it’s also a trade of your time against money. If you like doing it, you should. If you hate doing it, it’s not worth the money.

But before you make money, you must start somewhere.

7 Steps to Start from Scratch

  1. Launch your blog (start imperfect)
  2. Create consistent content
  3. Sign up for relevant affiliate programs + create a freebie to find out what audience wants + turn the freebie into low-ticket offer
  4. Turn affiliate product or low-ticket offer into an online course
  5. After you’ve got traffic, consider display ads (don’t focus on this)
  6. Continue to publish consistent and high-quality content
  7. Create a new online course that makes sense as the “next, best step”
