At one point in our lives, we come across something so interesting to us that we want to take the leap and buy all the equipment necessary to take part in the activity. However, assuming we are adults, we don’t actually go and hit that ‘checkout’ button. We realize that we’re much simpler than that and can’t possibly make time for a new and expensive hobby.

I hate to break it to you, but that’s simply not true. There’s a simple, cheap, and readily available form for even the most investing passions. Some of them are lesser-known, so take this opportunity to pick something you like and be that super quirky, interesting person that keeps bees and sharpens knives.

Solitary Beekeeping

Your standard hive beekeeping can run you into the mid hundreds and takes loads of research to do correctly so your investment doesn’t fail. Solitary beekeeping is like the cheap little brother, and let’s you control and view your progress safely. Essentially, you are housing leaf-cutter bees or mason bees, which have no queen or worker bees. It requires minimal research, little space, and if it doesn’t work out, you will only have spent as much as you would on a nice meal for two.

Origami

While young and in school, my class would often do origami projects either to pass time or as part of a cultural lesson. I remember failing. A lot. Mostly because I was 8 with small, uncoordinated hands and using cheap neon construction paper with the same template as the rest of the class. Where’s the fun there? Well now I’m older and like trying things to perfection, with a better understanding color, shape, depth, and precision. I have YouTube and Reddit on my side as research mediums. What a time to do origami!

Brewing Kombucha

The digestion super drink isn’t just for your splurge at Whole Foods. Kombucha is easily made at home and can be tailored to your test buds. ‘Brewing’ is such a heavy word for us who feel we have limited kitchen space and kitchen time. However, the drink doesn’t take much time or equipment to ferment. After you’ve put your drink together, you put it aside and wait. Tutorials are vast but quick to follow. After some time you’ll have a huge supply of your fizzy friend that will improve your gut and joint health. Since much of the equipment is reusable, you won’t have buyers remorse on the ~$50 refreshment investment.

Knife Sharpening

Knife sharpening is a skill often held by chefs and home cooks out of necessity. Realistically, sharpening at home can help everyone, because it saves you tons of money. A whetstone is a tool that helps you shape your knife to a sharpened edge that can cut anything with ease. Now you can sharpen a Daiso knife to be much sharper than one from the store. You’re less likely to get injured and more likely to feel like a fruit ninja while cutting your kid apples. Sharpen your friend’s and family’s knives to make their lives easier. You’re a good friend after all!

We don’t give ourselves enough credit. We are interesting and we are worthy of doing cool, new things. The next time you see someone doing something fun and extraordinary, ask yourself, “Would doing that make me happy? Would it bring out something in me that I can benefit from?” If the answer is yes, then go and get started. There are communities for everything and they’re ready to help bring you on board.
