You must sit in an uncomfortable cross-legged position to meditate

This position became popularized at least visually because it is the position assumed by higher level meditators and meditators of the highest level. It is a specially crafted position that enables you to sit in stillness for the longest amount of time in order to go deeply into your personality. This was a position that sages got into in order to be comfortable and avoid disturbance by the body while they meditated on being Enlightened. Chances are, you’re not meditating on becoming Enlightened just yet, so it’s perfectly ok if you don’t adopt their special posture, chances are with a regular person, their mind will disturb them long before their body. You can sit in any erect seated position that is comfortable to you, or if you’ve the knack for it, do it lying down. Many people tend to fall asleep lying down so it’s best for the beginner to do it from a seated position in order to maximize awareness and alertness.
