This is one of those that you hear very often

Meditation takes years to learn

My spiritual teacher laughs really hard at this notion it takes years to learn meditation. You can learn meditation in 2/3 minutes but doing meditation is another proposition entirely. Meditation is process based. If you were to think of your personality like a hydraulic system, with a piston and a cylinder, and it was terribly rusty if you put the piston into the cylinder it would break. This is what it’s like when people attempt to do single pointed meditation. It is impossible for them to think of one thought to the exclusion of all others. So, we do more relaxed activities first to prepare us for this. Like with the piston and the cylinder you have to get off the flaking rust with a wire brush, then rough rust with sandpaper, then the smaller rust with finer sandpaper and only when it is rust free do you oil it, and the piston slips in effortlessly. This is meditation. Single pointed meditation takes minutes to learn and execute but the preparatory work is what can take some time.
