macOS Ventura Kills Passwords Dead

A while back, I wrote about my frustrations with Apple — specifically, two computers that, because of a bug the company refused to either acknowledge or address, no longer worked.

Yet here we are. I’m still using Apple’s computers and mobile devices. To paraphrase Brokeback Mountain, I wish I knew how to quit you, Apple. But let’s not get into that now. Now, let’s focus on something the tech giant seems poised to get right.

At the World Wide Developer’s Conference this week, Apple announced, well, pretty much what you’d expect them to announce. A fancier MacBook Air and new versions of their primary operating systems. iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. Lots of new bells and whistles? Check. Sleeker, prettier designs? Check.

Nothing revolutionary just quality of life improvements.

One thing in Ventura caught my eye, though. I don’t know if this feature has a name, but here’s a quote from Cult of Mac that gives the basic gist:

Apple has worked with the FIDO Alliance to bring passkeys that will eventually…hopefully replace passwords for good. Passkeys are unique digital keys that let you to log in to…
