So You Want to Hire Me: Do Your Research

Maybe you saw an old version of my resume on some platform I no longer use. Maybe you noticed me on LinkedIn. But, however you encountered me, you’re thinking about interviewing me, or putting me in front of some one to interview me, for a software job.

But before you call me, or email me, I’d like to give you a tip: Do your research first.

You see, I have a fairly sizable online presence, and I am easy to find. If you dig a little, you’ll notice that all of my Facebook posts are now public. You will also see my Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Quora. Maybe if you’re savvy enough, you will even see this Medium blog and read some of my posts. So really, given that you have Google at your disposal, and knowing the fact that I am working every single day to build a personal brand with online content, there is no excuse for you not knowing a good deal about me before we first talk.

And you know what, I can tell if you haven’t done your research. If you’ve only seen my resume, you may know that I was once a photographer, but I won’t be impressed unless you mention that you looked at my Instagram account, and show me which photos you like. Hell, you probably should give me a follow to show that you’re serious.

And if you stopped by my LinkedIn, and didn’t do any more digging, you really should be ashamed of yourself. I am so tired of hearing questions about the frameworks I’ve used, or if I know about databases, or if I’ve ever used AWS. I HAVE BEEN WRITING SOFTWARE FOR 20 YEARS PEOPLE!!! Show some personality and ask me about my love of scotch whisky, or my obsession with tea, or my approach to producing music. Yes, that’s right, I even have a SoundCloud, though I haven’t written any music in four years (long story).

So in conclusion, take my advice and do some research on me before hitting me up about a job. Showing that you have actual interest in me as a person will go a long way towards your goal of my hiring me.

I’m a photographer. This is Shane Eli (Facebook, Twitter) from 2012.
