All of us love our dogs, and our obsession is justified by the love and attention they give back to us. We have a wide range to choose from when it comes to bringing a furry friend home. Invariably once we decided on getting one home, it will be one of the American or European pedigree breeds. Our social conformity has led us to a situation where we either have completely ignored our Indian breeds or most of us are not even aware there exist some really good pedigree breeds indigenous to our country. In this series of Indian Breeds, let us meet a few of our Indian furry friends

The Indian Chippiparai Hound ( also called Kanni in Tamil)
The population of Chippiparai hounds are dwindling and are now restricted to a few villages down south in Tamilnadu and Kerala. The hound gets its name from the place Chippiparai in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu where royalties bred them as a status symbol. They are thought to be direct descendants of the Saluki or Sloughi breed of dogs from Egypt.

Once the most sought after companions of royalty, their population is dwindling and there are only a couple of them left in the southern states of Tamilnadu and on the banks of Periyar in Kerala.

They come in various colors including Fawn, Reddish brown, Silver- Grey, Black with tall legs and curved tails. The average male grows up to 2 ft and female around 1.8 ft. Their short coat helps in keeping away ticks and fleas and can be kept shining with little or no grooming. They are high heat resistant and are not that well adjusted to colder climates. These are ferocious hunters and hence they require a lot of exercise and can be very healthy throughout their lives with little or no veterinary care.

They can be trained to socialize at a very young age and become an excellent watch and guard dogs. They do have a fiery temperament and hence won’t take kindly to strangers or intruders. While they look man nourished ( this is because of our obsession with fluffy dogs like labs and retrievers ) they are not, they are very robust, agile and healthy and are very good eaters. They do not require any special diet and are normally fed human food like rice, vegetables, chicken etc which their owners eat . They may not be the best choice if you choose them as your first dog or decide to house them in an apartment with restricted space
