The American Eskimo dogs belong to the Spitz family and often referred to as the “Dog beautiful”. They are Playful, Perky and Smart. Their good looks and intelligence makes them a complete package of Beauty and Brains

They belong to Nordic Spitz breed and resemble another Nordic breed called Pomeranian. The Nordic breeds have very similar physical traits, Thick and profuse coats, Foxlike face, Small but sturdy physique and tails which wind on their back and they have small ears. While it’s called the American Eskimo, its origins are not traced to America. Some say that they originated in Germany while others refute it. They also don’t have anything to do with Eskimos. They were originally farm dogs and could be trained to become watchdogs too. Their rise to fame was because of the show business. Thanks to their beauty and intelligence they could master several tricks in short periods of time and a lot of traveling circuses around America started using them for entertainment.

One of the most famous performing Dogs of America was Pierre an American Eskimo dog which was the first ever dog to do a Tightrope waking stunt in the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1930.

The American Eskimo dog comes in three sizes, Standard, Mini, and Toy. Standard dogs grow up to be around 1.5 feet weighing 12–13 Kg and Miniature grow to about 1 foot weighing 10 Kgs and Toys around 1/2 feet weighing around 500 Grams. They are generally very healthy and can remain so with proper and frequent proactive checkups and care. They, however, are prone to a few illnesses which are typical for the breeds like Hip Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, and Cataracts

The Eskimos Dog has two coats, one fully white coat outside and a short dense undercoat. They are easy to clean and groom. They do ahead a lot an hence require proper brushing to remove the dead hair at least once a week. They are high energy dogs and hence require a lot of exercise and playtime. Without proper exercise or if left alone for long periods of time they become hyper and destructive. They are very trainable and training them requires least efforts.
