PayPal has been the payment method of choice for merchants and consumers for more than a decade. PayPal Checkout serves as sign of security and confidence not only for the millions of consumers who transact online and in-store but also for merchants of all sizes — small, medium and large all around the world, who cater to global customer base, want to keep it simple and do not want to deal with the complexities of accepting different payment methods or the fraud/risk that payment transactions may involve. They rely on the promise that PayPal brings, and we work to keep it that way.

PayPal has been a pioneer in the payments industry and we follow and live that with pride each day. Amongst the hundreds of problems, we solve, to make our customers lives easier every day, we recently launched a new innovative way of bringing PayPal Checkout to a new digital wallet — Google Pay. As part of this integration, we introduced many new firsts, one of them being an ability for an existing PayPal merchant to quickly onboard and offer PayPal as a payment method within Google Pay and for the consumer to still get the same experience and security as they are used to getting when checking out with PayPal.

Don’t be the Same, BE BETTER

Online purchases have come a long way since the world of websites to marketplaces, native apps and in-app shopping. Social shopping, voice shopping with wearables and home-assistant devices are further enhancing the way we shop. With the digital wallet’s tight integration into these new ecosystems, and users becoming habituated to purchasing more on mobile than on web, customers are buying in more innovative ways than ever before, and purchases have become invisible. Opportunities to purchase have increased multi-fold and so have the number of ways to purchase. PayPal is leading the charter by using breakthroughs in technology, our years of knowledge and expertise to offer our customers stress-free, fast and seamless shopping experience without them having to leave where they are. Consumers will continue to get the speed, convenience and security that PayPal offers without having to take extra steps or the need to enter unnecessary information. We are making sure we are, where our customers are.

At PayPal, we put people at the center of everything we do

Visual mocks of new integration

This is the message that will greet you as soon as you land in PayPal headquarters in the Silicon Valley. We value our relationship with our millions of customers and strive towards offering the best, keeping in mind we are all about the user’s secure financial identity as well as convenience. As part of this new offering, the consumer can vault PayPal within the Google Pay wallet by linking his PayPal identity to Google identity without sharing the financial data. Once linked, PayPal can be setup as the default payment method in the Google Pay wallet and is ready to use with one-click not only on Google properties such as YouTube, Play Store but also on merchants offering Google Pay on web and android in native apps and in-app purchases. The customer experience is seamless and offers the same buyer protection and post transaction experience as a regular PayPal Checkout. We are trying to offer to our customers the payment experience they are looking for and streamlining experiences for better conversion for our merchants.

Be the Customer: See Yourself as Your Customers Do

Merchants are always trying to stay ahead of the consumers and we work towards bringing their dream come true. Over the years, PayPal has been merchants’ partner in helping them stay ahead of the curve, bringing the customers trust to them and helping them manage, run and grow their businesses.

A PayPal merchant integrating with the Google Pay wallet can now accept PayPal from within Google Pay wallet. Whenever a merchant accepts a new payment method, the most tedious part of that process is the time it takes to integrate and test. We understand that and, in an effort, to bring this new integration to our merchants without them having to re-integrate PayPal, we introduced a way where the merchant will get a PayPal proprietary token from Google SDK with minimal integration requirement and the same can be passed on to current PayPal v1/payment REST APIs, without having to change any transaction or post transaction APIs, webhooks or reporting. This not only works for merchants who are using PayPal REST APIs but also for BrainTree SDK. The documentation for the new integration is available here and we continue to look forward to your feedback to make this better.

This is just the beginning

This integration is live and opens new avenues for other innovative integrations originating from Marketplaces, Social media, Messenger and Voice enabled ecosystems where a merchant may be relying on the payment methods offered by the ecommerce platform.

PayPal has a lot of history and knowledge and we continue to work towards simplifying merchant integrations and bringing the best user experience to our customers. This is just the beginning of the more futuristic and scalable integrations PayPal will continue to work towards as customers find new avenues to shop and we lead with their aspirations and our innovation.
