Discord has always been touted as the social media platform for gamers. However, in recent years, this focus from gaming has shifted, and Discord has seen a massive surge from audiences outside of gaming. These new audiences include everyone from podcasters to stock and cryptocurrency trading communities.
Up until now, these communities have been primarily supported through donations and staff volunteers. However, as of recent, many have seen this surge in users as a way to capitalize on a growing market. Anyone can create a Discord server, and with more people on the platform than ever before, it’s become an attractive option for those wanting to start their very own subscription business.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to start a successful subscription business on Discord in 2021.
This guide will teach you how to do the following:
- Create your Discord server
- Connect your Discord to PayRole
- Link your Stripe account to begin accepting payments
- Create your first package
- Share and promote your Discord community
STEP 1: Create your Discord server
Begin by logging in, or creating an account here: Discord
Once logged in, click the (+) at the top left of your screen. This will prompt the following.
Select “Create My Own” and then select “For a club or community.” Give your server a great name and click Create. Congrats! 🎉 You just created your first Discord server. Now it’s time to link it up with PayRole and begin accepting payments.
STEP 2: Connect your Discord to PayRole
To begin, head on over to PayRole and click “Login with Discord” in the upper-right hand corner.
Login to your Discord account and click Authorize.
You should be redirected to this page automatically. Click “Seller Dashboard” and then select your server.
I’m going to choose my server, “Example.”
Now that you’re in the dashboard, you can initialize the setup process by clicking on “click here” in the top banner.
This will redirect you to Discord and ask you to add the PayRole bot to your server. This is a critical step, as without it, we have no way of handling your subscribers.
STEP 3: Link your Stripe account to begin accepting payments
Once you’ve added the bot, you’ll be asked to link your Stripe account.
This is the final step in the setup process.
STEP 4: Create your first package
Booyah! Now that you’re in, you can begin by creating your first paid package. A package requires a title, a short description of what the customer receives, a price, billing period, and a role to reward upon purchase. If you haven’t created a role in your server yet, you can do so by going to Server Settings > Roles. You can use roles to offer role-based access to specific categories and channels within your server. A complete guide on roles and channel permissions can be found here: How do I set up permissions?
Once you’ve created your packages, you can view them in your store page by going to Checkout > Open Checkout Page. You can share this with your members by simply copying and pasting the page URL.
To embed the packages on an existing website, you need to get the package’s unique embed link. To do this, click the Embed button next to Delete on the package you wish to embed.
STEP 5: Share and promote your Discord community
And…just like that you’ve successfully created your first Discord server and readied it for accepting new subscribers. Now you need to get the word out! Social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, & Twitter can drive tremendous traffic to your server.
We look forward to seeing what you create!
