📁How To Install OneNote On Ubuntu 📁 Linux 18.10, 17.10 & 16.04 → Full Working Tutorial 2018/2019…

Tutorial explains simple method to install Microsoft OneNote on an Ubuntu Linux machine…

➡️ Whilst the above video is very good - describing the process required to get OneNote working on Ubuntu - some parts need explanation… ⬅️

The following explains exactly what’s required to get OneNote installed & running on Ubuntu. Whilst the process is simple, there are several elements which may require help…

📎 Instructions & Notes 📎

The 📹 video 📹 misses out a number of important factors…

  1. Some features don’t work
Paste with formatting and OneDrive don’t work
    -
  2. 💿 You need to mount an ISO 💿
Video forgets to mention you require gnome-disk-utility
    -
  3. 💾 Backup ISO required 💾
You’ll need to provide a backup ISO to mount
    -

Whilst these do present some challenges, the underpin is that if you’re able to download the appropriate ISO file and use the right software, you should be able to get all versions of OneNote working on Ubuntu without issue…

☀️ Overview ☀️

The gist of the process is to use Wine (through PlayOnLinux) to mount an Office ISO as if you were using Windows…

🍷 Wine 🍷

To run ANY Windows application on Linux, you require Wine

🍷 Wine 🍷 is a “compatibility layer”, which means that it provides a lot of the functionality & library-level processes required to get Windows apps running on Linux WITHOUT running the OS. Very similar to DirectX on Windows…

🍷 Wine 🍷 running on Ubuntu…

Whilst 🍷 Wine 🍷 is great, it doesn’t actually provide a front-end interface to get any applications working. It provides CLI-level functionality, but if you just want to gain a visual concept of what’s happening, you’ll need a GUI

🐧 PlayOnLinux 🐧

This is where PlayOnLinux comes in…

🐧 PlayOnLinux 🐧 gives you a GUI to install & manage Windows applications running through 🍷Wine🍷 on Ubuntu

By downloading a compatible ISO file, you’re able to mount it with Ubuntu and get it working with 🍷Wine🍷 through 🐧PlayOnLinux🐧…

Installing Windows applications with 🐧 PlayOnLinux 🐧…

Whilst you’re at liberty to mount OneNote/Office directly with Wine, it’s much simpler to

⚠️ Installation ⚠️

As mentioned, the steps to install the software are to first ensure that you have PlayOnLinux on your system, and then that you are able to mount the correct ISO for OneNote

1️⃣ PlayOnLinux

The first step is to install PlayOnLinux

Type the following commands into bash:

wget -q http://deb.playonlinux.com/public.gpg" -O- | sudo apt-key add
sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_natty.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
sudo apt-get install gnome-disk-utility
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
sudo apt-get update

This will install two packages →

🐧 PlayOnLinux 🐧 provides Wine compatibility (as explained).
👽 GnomeDiskUtility 👽 provides the ability to mount the OneNote ISO.

This allows you to not just get the ISO mounted & working (step 2), but also provides the ability to mount and read it on your system…

2️⃣ Download ISO

Next, you need to download the OneNote ISO to your system…

DropBox (where the file is hosted) is very reputable…

This is either done by downloading a copy from the Internet, or providing your own backup copy. We are not partial to how you obtain this ISO — you just need to be able to mount it in Ubuntu.

This page provides access to a 2010 version which you should save directly to your hard drive. Once downloaded, you should have the icon appear on your desktop:

3️⃣ Mount ISO

Once saved, right-click the ISO & select “Open with Disk Image Mounter”…

This will import the ISO into Disk Image Mounter

This will create a new “drive” where the ISO’s files will be present. This drive will operate exactly like a CD/DVD drive would, except it’s entirely virtual.

The task now is to get these files loaded into PlayOnLinux

4️⃣ Load with PlayOnLinux

Loading the application into PlayOnLinux requires you to first “install” the application”. To do this, follow the steps here:

  • Click on the “PlayOnLinux” icon from your apps menu
  • When POL loads, click “Install” — this will bring up a new Window
  • From the new Window, select “Office” from the top bar
  • Scroll down and select the version of Office applicable to your ISO
  • Click “Install”…

This will prompt you to load an appropriate DVD/CD to which you’re now able to select your newly mounted ISO:

This will lead you onto another Window which allows you to choose
mounted optical media (which will include your mounted ISO):

If the mounted ISO does not appear, click Refresh

After this, you will need to press “Next”, which should start the installation process for Office...

After this completes, you’ll be able to load OneNote either from the apps toolbar or from PlayOnLinux directly…

As mentioned, this should give you full access to OneNote (and other Office apps) on your Ubuntu system…
