LCD, OLED, and Quantum Dots, stand aside: Samsung is rolling out the next generation of display technology for its newest television with news of a 110-inch 4K HDR MicroLED TV arriving next year.

Samsung has been working with MicroLED for a while now, and last year launched its modular luxury TV, The Wall, which can be scaled up to 292 inches. But the company is now using the tech for a much more conventional television—albeit a massive one.

“As consumers rely on their televisions for more functions than ever, we are incredibly excited to bring the 110-inch MicroLED to the commercial market,” said Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung MicroLED is going to redefine what premium at-home experiences mean for consumers around the world.”

Although the size is impressive, other features of the TV are even more so. The use of micrometer-sized LED lights eliminate the need for a backlight and color filters, leading to much-improved image quality and 100% DCI and Adobe RGB color gamut support. The screen-to-body ratio is 99.99%, which means there’s simply no outer bezel—this is 110 inches of pure screen. And somehow, Samsung offers 5.1 channel surround sound without requiring an external speaker.

What we don’t know yet is how much the will TV cost, but it will be available globally in the first quarter of next year. As to why this is happening now, Samsung said it “innovated to make it a reality by developing cutting-edge surface mount technology — along with a new production process derived from its semiconductor business — making MicroLED technology easier to manufacture, deliver, and install.” And once installed, this TV is going to last a long time: Samsung states that the MicroLEDs have a lifespan of 100,000 hours.
