Tesla recalled more than 285,000 vehicles in China, most of which were produced at the company’s Shanghai plant, because of safety issues resulting from defects in their cruise control systems.

The Wall Street Journal reports that China’s State Administration for Market Regulation issued the recall because the cruise control systems in the affected vehicles “could be accidentally activated and potentially result in an unexpected speed increase.” Tesla has issued a software update to address the flaw.

The recall is said to cover Tesla Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs made between December 2019 and June 2021. Almost 250,000 of the affected vehicles were manufactured at Tesla’s plant in Shanghai, according to the report, and more than 35,000 were imported from the company’s US factories.

The Journal says that the nearly 250,000 vehicles recalled from Tesla Shanghai represent an estimated 93.7% of the company’s total production within the country. (At least according to figures from the China Passenger Car Association; Tesla doesn’t publicly disclose its production numbers.)

This recall is the latest roadblock to Tesla’s efforts to expand its presence in China. The company’s also seen its vehicles banned from certain areas due to concerns about their cameras, which prompted it to clarify that its cameras only work in the US, and faced viral complaints regarding its vehicles’ brakes.
