What to Stream This Weekend

Peacemaker (Photo: Courtesy of HBO Max)

Time for one last trip to the Hotel Transylvania, catch some Cheer (leaders) with squad goals, and watch the Peacemaker return for a killing.

By Eric Griffith

We’re in the midst of the ever-intensifying streaming wars, and there are too many shows and movies to choose from, spread across too many video-streaming services. So we’re making it easier for you. Each week, the PCMag features team takes turns highlighting the streaming content they’re excited to watch or think you should binge. Fire up your media-streaming device of choice, and get watching.P

Peacemaker (HBO Max)

There was a lot to like about 2021’s The Suicide Squad, the sequel from director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) that was almost more of a reboot of 2016’s Suicide Squad. But the best part might have been John Cena’s Peacemaker, a conceited douchebag who considers himself a hero because he’s willing to kill anyone…for peace. HBO and Gunn knew it and were smart to line up Cena and a new crew of misfits for this continuation, with all 8 episodes written by Gunn. The first three drop this weekend.

Brazen (Netflix)

Alyssa Milano is back on TV in this Netflix Original movie. She’s going for a sexy/kinky Murder She Wrote vibe playing a mystery writer who goes home to D.C. only to find her sister murdered, and with a past as a webcam girl with dark secrets revealed. Only a writer could solve the crime by getting way too involved.

Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (Prime Video)

With 100% less Adam Sandler, can this series about classic movie monsters chillin’ at a hotel still entertain? SNL’s Andy Samberg may help; he’s upgraded to the full-on lead in this one, playing Dracula’s son-in-law.

Cheer — Season 2 (Netflix)

The highly popular and Emmy-winning docu-series about the Navarro College cheer team is back for a second season and shows how the members deal with fame, infamy, and COVID as they prepare for another major competition.

Archive 81 (Netflix)

An archive restorer is asked to fix some videos almost lost in a fire, but what he sees makes him think he can save the life of a woman on the tapes — a woman who died a quarter-century before. You know, because, demons. It’s based on the found-footage podcast of the same name.

Sex Appeal (Hulu)

The school mega-brain ignored sex and realizes it’s time to get as perfect at that as she is at grades. Or will sex lead to love?

Eternals (Disney+)

The MCU movie everyone forgot about in the wake of Spider-Man: No Way Home is ready for streaming this weekend. Come see how the re-awakening of the Deviants brings the in-hiding Eternals on Earth out to play, violently, in the merry Marvel method.
