What to Stream This Weekend
Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum get lost, Rebel Wilson finds herself back in high school, and the Muppets get mecha.
The content pie is vast, and you’ve got the whole weekend to decide how you want to slice it. We’re in the midst of the ever-intensifying streaming wars, and there are too many shows and movies to choose from, spread across too many video-streaming services. So we’re making it easier for you. Senior Year (Netflix)
At first glance, Senior Year seems like it might suffer from problematic Never Been Kissed vibes, but it has some major differences. Rebel Wilson plays a woman who has emerged from a coma 20 years after a cheerleading accident. She discovers how much has changed in that time, but one thing remains: her desire to finish high school and be crowned prom queen.
The Lost City (Paramount+)
The Lost City has a premise as delightful as its star, Sandra Bullock. She plays a romance novelist who gets kidnapped by a billionaire because he believes she has the inside scoop on the location of a treasure-filled lost city she put in one of her books. Her himbo cover model, played by Channing Tatum, devises a plan to rescue her.
The Kids in the Hall (Prime Video)
You’ve probably heard of The Kids in the Hall, the massively influential Canadian sketch comedy show, but you might not have seen The Kids in the Hall, because it’s been off screens for nearly 30 years. But it’s back now with the entirety of its original cast and eight new episodes.
Hacks: Season 2 (HBO Max)
Season two of Hacks goes on the road. Deborah embarks on a comedy tour and takes Ava along for the (bus) ride. It’s safe to say that comedy (and some drama) ensues.
The Essex Serpent (Apple TV+)
In this limited series, Claire Danes is a widow who leaves London for Essex and searches for a mythical serpent. There she finds a sympathetic soul in a pastor played by Tom Hiddleston.
Candy (Hulu)
The limited series Candy is anything but sweet. It’s a based-on-a-true-story crime drama, in which Jessica Biel plays housewife turned killer Candy Montgomery who murders Betty Gore (played by Yellowjackets’ Melanie Lynskey).
The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix)
If you’re a fan of Bosch, then try The Lincoln Lawyer. It’s an adaptation of another series from Michael Connelly about another troubled protagonist. This time it’s an OxyContin-addicted lawyer who works out of his Lincoln.
Sesame Street Mecha Builders (HBO Max)
This Sesame Street spinoff is a STEM-focused cartoon where Abby, Cookie Monster, and Elmo appear in mecha form to solve problems with science.
