UPDATE: According to various local news sites, Beaverton Police are now investigating along with the Beaverton School District. An emails was sent to parents on Monday but that was a week AFTER the incident.

According to a press release from Washco Solidarity, transphobic slurs were scrawled in a boy’s bathroom in the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy in Beaverton. The incident occurred on June 8th, 2017 and named a particular student (see three photographs below, edited to remove the student’s name).

Neither ACMA nor the school district sent out any notification to parents. Instead, parents found out from cellphone pictures students took. A parent Washco Solidarity spoke with expressed concern for safety of the targeted student as well as other marginalized populations at the school. The parent also shared those concerns with school administration on the morning of June 9 but administrators dismissed those concerns saying all students were safe and the parent was free to pick their own child up if they wished.

“…administrators dismissed those concerns saying all students were safe and the parent was free to pick their own child up if they wished.”

WashCo Solidarity called on Beaverton School District officials to intervene, calling the shaming and threatening behavior unacceptable. An organizer with Washco Solidarity said “We expect administrators to act transparently so that all students can feel safe at school and free from being targeted for discrimination or harm.”

According the press release Washco Solidarity exists to stand with marginalized people against threats, ridicule, or systemic discrimination. We advocate through direct action and solidarity work for a society free of bigotry in all forms.
