Calvert Hall offense explodes in second half to seal their first conference victory, beating Gilman, 11–7

Calvert Hall coach Bryan Kelly was all set to deliver the pep talk to his team at halftime. But his son and senior, Jacob, asked if he could do the honors. And apparently, whatever he said the Cardinals definitely followed through in a big way.

The thing that separates the good teams and the bad teams are the leaders that lead by example.

A very talented team with hungry upperclassmen eager to make some noise this season in the A-conference, the Gilman Greyhounds were feeling very good about the first half performance they put together. Gilman had a 6–4 lead and was maybe a little too excited. Gilman came out in the third quarter and committed some costly penalties which allowed Calvert Hall to tie up the game at 6.

Then Jacob was fed a beautiful pass by Daniel Kelly and the senior gave Calvert Hall their first lead of the game. The defending A-conference champs would score six unanswered goals in the third quarter to propel them to an 11–7 victory.

“Everyone gets everybody’s best in this league,” said Bryan Kelly when asked how’s it feel to be the defending champions and getting every team in the A-conference best effort. “If you don’t bring your best, you’ve going to lose it’s that simple. I don’t care who you’re playing or where your playing it’s a great league and it’s a battle.

Gilman was feeling it in the first half. The Greyhounds have some slick offensive players that will continue to get better as the season goes on. Douglas Godine, Will DeMuth, Billy Spillman, Pierce Washburn and Piper Bond are an excellent group who made the Calvert Hall defense work in the first half.

Going forward, Brooks Matthews the Gilman coach hopes this experience will be a learning one for his team to stay disciplined. “We got better today but we have to get even better to beat a team like this. We have to learn how to play the whole game. And when things start to get out of control we have to bring back under control quicker than we did today.”

Along with Kelly, who had two goals, Cole Herbert also impressed with a hat trick, but during the scoring spree guys such as Jack Sawyer, Peter Ilardo, Trey Smith, and Grant Mitchell came up big with goals.

Calvert Hall (1–0 in the MIAA-A conference) will play Archbishop Spalding on Friday. Gilman (0–1 in the MIAA-A conference) will host Boys’ Latin on Friday.
