I’ve lost my grip on all the things I want/need to do, but I still have a handle on a joint project. (No, not that kind of joint!)

We’ve turned the corner, in a good way, on our unique project that has created the almost published “The Three Melissas — The Practical Guide to Surviving Family Homelessness.” Here’s a brief update.

Meet the 3 Melissas!

The Three Melissas

Our awesome threesome — the Three Melissas — have now taken center stage on our book and internet presence! They’re as excited as Diana and I are that our book is now in the publisher’s hands (Charles Bruce Foundation) and is moving towards reality!

The book would be nothing without these 3 women who courageously shared their wisdom about family homelessness for this unique handbook. (L-R) Melissa A from IL, Melissa N from FL, and Melissa T from KS.

We’ll feature them in a future post, and they’re certainly featured in the book that’s filled with their wisdom!

Practical insights from their lived experiences are captured in this handy guide designed to be distributed to families experiencing homelessness. Proceeds from sales of this unique handbook will be divvied up among them. They deserve it!

Meet the authors!

We’re happy to introduce ourselves to you as the authors of The Three Melissas — The Practical Guide to Surviving Family Homelessness.

Diana and I have worked together for decades! And this is our most exciting project ever! (Our previous project: The Charlie Book: 60 Ways to Help Homeless Kids.)

About the Authors: When writing a book about homelessness, people with lived experience are the experts. When developing a survival guide for parents experiencing homelessness, co-authors Diane Nilan and Diana Bowman wanted not only to help parents in chaotic homeless situations protect and care for their children, but to provide a window into the world of homelessness through the eyes of parents who had been there.

Nilan and Bowman, two long-time advocates and homelessness professionals (and NC residents), have more than 75 years combined experience learning about family homelessness in the United States.

For decades, they have provided invaluable information and assistance to communities, educators, service providers, and policymakers. Conveying the challenges of experiencing homelessness while raising children as well as providing tips to help families survive the resulting hardships has always been at the heart of their efforts.
