“I would rarely invest the time and energy required to get the best deal. It was just never a priority of mine. You would think I don’t value money enough, but my attitude has changed a lot lately. I research online on various blogs and comparison sites for the best deal. I even try bartering — and occasionally it works! This whole process is actually pretty fun, sometimes, I actually feel sorry for the shop assistant! But at the end of the day, I’m just being smart about buying quality stuff for the best price.” — Veronica

Good things take time and effort. If, for example, you don’t value your health, relationships or career, sooner or later they’ll deteriorate — but of course, you already knew that. What you don’t know is that money is no different — how you value money has a direct correlation to your financial stability and independence. But don’t despair, that doesn’t mean we all need to be experts in relation to managing it. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

It just means that when possible, aim at improving the mind as your goal. It’s your attitude that counts. For small common purchases, it pays to stick to a routine of where and when to shop, sticking to a shopping list in order to avoid purchasing unnecessary items. For larger, more expensive purchases, you can save a tonne by investing a little time into comparing prices online. Better yet, research alternative ways in which you can get the same result for much less. Veronica does it, just look at this handbag she purchased from a Salvos. This time investment can mean channelling more savings into financial investments to increase your passive income.

For example, if you plan to improve your fitness without hiring a personal trainer, perhaps you could find a friend with similar goals to attend fitness classes with. Or, instead of purchasing lunch every day, consider cooking up a big pot of your favourite Risotto on Sunday, dividing it into daily portions and freezing the separate containers for your midweek work day meals.

Though there are thousands of ways to get the best deal, some of the old fashion styles, like bartering, will soon no longer be able to take effect. Many things we purchase are online or otherwise have a fixed price. But you’d be surprised the deals available if you ask or enquire. It also just helps in entrenching the idea to yourself that you value the thing you are handing over (money!). In any case, do not forget that there are a number of price beat or match guarantees which take your savvy shopping to new heights.

Veronica — you’ve grown like a flower and purchase like a bee — keep up the good work.
