Tirusulam Hills
Been there, all along!
They were always there, silently looking down upon you, whenever you whizzed past the Airport. In addition to offering a scenic view of the city and the horizon at the Bay of Bengal, they have doubled up as a fitness and trekking hub for Chennaites.
There are a couple of hills that constitute the cluster, out of which one hosts a CSIR Structural Engineering Lab and another has a motorable road that leads to a Police Department building on top. The hill with the lab is out of bounds for the commoners. People are allowed on the other hill ONLY on Sunday mornings.
How to Reach
Reach Chennai Airport, from wherever you are. Take the left turn just before PVR Cinemas, which would lead you to a railway crossing. Turn right post the crossing and continue straight until you reach a 3-road junction. Take two consecutive right turns from there to reach the base of the hill. It is a straight road from there.
The ascent on cycle is tricky for a starter. Be sure to be on a 1–1/2/3 gear while climbing up. One can also choose to trek up the hill from this point via a trekking trail.
While Here
Enjoy the panorama!
If you are lucky and head to the hilltop on a fog-less morning, a beautiful horizon at the Bay of Bengal could greet you.
You could also join scores of athletes who head here to practice running and pedalling over slopy terrains (we don’t have much of that around here).
